Starting a new Jeep project, typical heep... One tons, 40 inch tires, linked in the rear w/ coilovers. Thought I'd try my hand at dovetailing it as well. The owner of the Jeep didn't seem to mind and I think it came out pretty cool.

It's obvious I'm no body man....

Yeah.... I think the little imperfections will be smoothed out at the body shop when it gets painted, maybe then I'll be happier with it.

Looks good to me. Better than i can do with sheetmetal. Anything under 1/4" is sheet metal BTW. :D

I'm happy with it. I just wish I had my DA. The metal came out a little lumpier than I wanted it to.

More of a body man than I am, that's for sure. Would love to a see a step by step write up on this. Gotta have some tech somewhere. :flipoff2:

I still have to do the right side. If people are interested I would be happy to take lotsa pics and do a step by step write up on it. I'm going to try out a few things different on the other side to try an make the metal a little smoother. One of those being bring my DA home from work and easy up on the 60 grit flap disc

BTW, this is Wankers Jeep. It'll be a slow build as we are doing it around paying work but I'll keep pics posted.

Thanks for all the kind words guys! It was really a role of the dice when I first cut into it, I was like "let's try to dovetail it... If it comes out shitty we'll cut the ass off and tube it in"...

Either way he wins...:D

I'd love to do it, we choose to go with a mild dove tail rather than a real steep angle, some might want to push it in a little further. If so, I guess you could just use the steps and adjust the cuts bigger.

BTW, I won't spend too much time addressing the inside panels, he's having the tub Line-X'd after it's painted.

Looks good except why did you cut so much off here.Would look better if you kept the frame covered.

I bet that piece of frame is gonna go away soon.
I like how you finished the angle on the corners, i.e.- straightened the angle back to square with the tailgate. I think it looks ghetto if people don't take the time to do that.
Nice job.:smokin:

We're going to be back half the frame, but I haven't decided if I want to do it with round tubing or square tubing.

I thought about keeping more of the corner on it but I decided to comp cut it, in the end I might wish I had left more corner but for now I think it looks decent.

Like Wanker said, it'll be back halfed with 1.75 round tube or 2x4 box, haven't decided which yet, but it's looking like it'll be round tube.

Thought I'd knock the dust off this thread. This Jeeps changed hands, Wanker decided to sell it for a sweet deal on a TJ. The new owners been wanting a Jeep for 10 years and this is his first one (one hell of a first Jeep IMO!)

Here's a little update, new owner was originally going to just leaf it and ride but has been persueded to go ahead and link the rear.

17" MRW locks w/ 42" IROKS
SAW C/O's and SAW smoothies up front
STaK, ATLAS, or built D300, ****IN NEED OF A PASS DROP CASE FOR THIS BUILD****

Just a typical Jeep build, nothing REAL fancy but it should be a hell of a go gitter...

Now to the current...

Last couple of days that we've worked on it have been real fruitful. Front shock hoops are bent and tacked in, we ditched the front fenders for some tube ones, front shackle reversal is done, the frames been completely cleaned and prepped (in reference to the tons of Jeep stock bracketry that is no longer being utilized), the rear axle is cleaned up , prepped (had to cut off all the link bracketry from my 4runner) and in place, and the cross over tube that the lower links will mount to is bent and tacked in place. We're on the fast track now. next time in the garage the rear 4 link should be complete and then I'll finish up the right side of the dovetail (that I've been putting off...) I still want to take pics of the other side of the dovetail from start to finish for those who were interested.

Lots of progress, should have it rolling soon. It, like every other project, has snowballed from a "lets just leaf it and ride out" to a "lets just do it right the first time, I know I'll want to do this and that later, so let's just do it now".

It's gonna be a pretty tough Jeep when done. New owner's been on the camera offensive so I'll upload the pics as soon as he gets them to me.

it looks good man, i did my first dovetail for the first time about a month ago. yours looks great. bondo is the trick to get the body looking straight, that is until you lay it into something and dent it all up.

on the subject, anyone modify a top? soft or hard for a dovetail? I would run it halftop, Just like to see if its out there

I think I'm actually going to try an order a set of comp cut fenders like the ones Poison Spider sells and try to mod then to match the dove. I think that would look cool plus give it a little more rigidity.

There's a guy here, Keith Bailey, with a bad ass Brusier chassis with all the bling, that runs what I can only guess is a custom soft top. That's the blingest thing on his rig to me...:smokin:

Should have pics up soon. I feel like it's a boring rig now, there's alot of people out there making some REALLY trick shit! My works way behind the times.... But I still enjoy doing it.:p

for rigidity i took a piece of 3/4" square tubing and welded it under the little over hang on top. it worked good for me kept everything pretty straight and durable.
