Alright so here is the deal I have a 92 Toyota Pick Up and Im trying to put in a new stereo system... the thing is that when I go to wire it up the way its supposed to be with the red power hooked up to the red power unit in the harness and the yellow to yellow... I get nothing. But the odd thing is that when I go to hook it up red from the stereo to yellow to the harness and yellow from the stereo to the red on the harness... all I get it to do is start up then it goes blank and get it to take cds and eject them... at first I thought it was a defective cd player but when I returned it and got a different one, the same thing happened... any ideas??

did you remove the factory clip from the dash wiring? You need a wiring diagram or spend a little time with your factory stereo removing and reconnecting individual wires to learn what each one does. Do not go blindly trying to send power through random wires in your new head. you can figure it out. just trace wires and take your time.

a test light would help alot better and would be easier

yellow - constant power
red- switched power
you can tie the two together on the stereo and then run a fused wire straight to the battery to test, and check to make sure you have a good ground.

if you don't have a strong enough ground it won't get power either. some cd players require a ground wire and a body ground. and also some cd players won't turn on without the antenna plugged in

There is no reason to remove and reconnect any wires and you don't need your factory radio for anything.

Just because the harness you bought has a ground (black wire) coming out of it doesn't mean there is a ground wire on that pin of the factory harness. On alot of Toyota's they use the frame of the radio as the ground. You need to make a ground with a ring terminal and a screw from the black wire coming out of your new radio.
The only reason a CD player wouldn't come on w/o the antenna plugged in is because you have a shitty ground. It is then grounding through the antenna.

Make your own ground like I mentioned in a previous post. Then use the ground location for the ground of the testlight or voltmeter you should have owned before attempting this. Check and insure that you have switched power on the red(turns on/off w/ key) and constant power on the yellow(always on regardless of key). Don't listen to supervert because you run the possibility of your radio staying on all the time and killing your battery.
You can also use a AA battery to connected to the pos and neg of your speaker leads to figure out which speaker is which because sometimes the harnesses mix up front and rear or left/right.

There is absolutely no reason to do that.

when you "start it up" are you referring to the car? if that is the case, more than likely your constant (yellow) fromteh radio is seeing 12v from the ignition (car side) and it allows you to eject cds. If hooking them up wire color to wire color does not work (i am assuming you are using an aftermarket radio harness in your vehicle) then i am willing to bet you have blown the fuse for the constant wire. check the fuse panel in the driver's kick as well as under the hood. if that fails, go to radio shack, buy a 5 dollar multimeter, and test them for yourself.
good luck.
