Snapped isn't really the word.. This was my first break, so I was surprised.. it shattered.. big time. :nuke: I'll have pics by the end of the night...

I say birfield/longfield/newfield because the P/O and the guy who built the truck said it has longfields. But from what I've seen here, the long field doesn't break, the axle shaft does..

Anyway, I was EXTREMELY close to home, (within 100 feet), so I drove it in 2wd into the garage. The hub (knuckle?)(is that the corect terminology? I'm talking about the area where the birfield is) seems to be OK, just saw 1 scratch in the metal inside there.

The inner part of the spindle, however, didn't seem to fare so well. I'll take a pic, and you guys tell me whatcha think...

Oh, I was testing my reversed quadrajet... so far, from what I can tell, it works AWESOME... cost me about $40.. long throttle cable, 3 feet of fuel line, and a Spectre spacer/adapter for a q-jet so the secondaries would clear the Performer intake..

I'm interested in the findings of this post. Post some pics of the broken birf, maybe we can see if it's a longfield, or maybe the newfield (which do break).

Wish I could break something within 100' of my garage!

Hey Eskimo,

I have a QJET that is about to replace my POS Holley. Just interested in what you mean by 'Reversed'? I was going to put mine in with the primaries to the front.

Probably a NEWFIELD, not a LONGFIELD being for the CV Unlimited area....better do your research before posting that you are the first to break a Longfield!

Here's the pics...

Now, I'm NOT saying it IS a longfield... and I don't know how to tell for sure.. I thought the newfields had a ring around the outer part? Please let me know...

that's not a longfield ! and i dont believe newfields to have anythinng welded to them . so that could be a newfield or a stock birf in my guess ..
btw what were you doing to have blown it apart like that ?

How can you tell it's not a longfield? I didn't think it was... dammit.

I was hung up on my left side slider, front tires were just barely on the ground, and was going forwards/backwards trying to rotate myself off the slider... I think the RF tire caught traction in reverse, the wheel was turned more than likely. BLAM-O..

OK, so I tried to change the subject line on my first post and it didn't take.. (Well, it didn't change the thread list on the main page...) If it's not a longfield, sorry to get everyone worked up.

If it were a longfeild, it would have a ring welded to the end of the birf, thats how you can tell its not...
good :nuke: though :D

Guys, how does the brass ring on the spindle look? Can I dress that to smooth it out? Also, there's an "X" passtern on the inner part of that... is that the way it should be? This is my first FJ... just wondering...

I know I need a birf and a axle shaft... anything else you can see from the pics?

It is a Newfield or a Stock Birf. Neither have a ring welded on the end.

I have had 2 Newfields grenade like that one....they are pretty brittle.

I think you can clean up the spindle and be OK.

Good luck!

Thanks Nolen.. I'll just add this to the never-ending list of things the P/O lied to me about...

Anyone got a short side axleshaft FS? I'm gonna go check the FS section now...

The "damaged" brass / bronze bushing in the spindle can be removed & replaced with OEM brass / bronze spindle bushing.

Just punch it out & replace with new bushing & you're set.

Also clean-up the gouges / scoring in the axle tube ball before reassembling.

Did you buy it from Terry Moorfield?

I met him and his cronies at GSMTR '2000

Lot's of bailing wire on those rigs :)

Well, Terry built it...I bought it from the guy who had Terry build it..

Bailing wire? Holding what on? There is some less-than-perfect work on my FJ, but it's all the stuff that the non-mechanically inclined P/O did, not the stuff Terry did..

Since I'm down until I can buy a pair of Longfields and a new axleshaft, I'm gonna take this time to really go over it stem-to-stern, and try and fix all the shortcuts taken... until such time as I can re-wire the whole damn thing.

Terry IS a character, though!

OK... It's a NEWfield, NOT a longfield... Sorry for the confusion!!!
Luckily, I will be getting a new one free.. $$$ is kinda tight right now...

Still need an axle shaft though!
