: FFL Transfer fees

On the Shotgun News website you can look up FFL holders that will do transfers in your area.
I have asked at a couple of local shops here in town and none of them will do transfers, so I looked online.
Only two here in the Springs. And they charge 10% OR 15%
There are some up in Denvar that charge 10-25$, but a couple of these add sales tax.

So what do you pay for transfers in your area?

I've been quoted $65 for a stripped AR lower, that's just the transfer.

Typical is $25-35 around here, though supposedly there's a new guy who's doing them for $15.

Fixed, and you might get him to come down on the price:laughing:

Got mine for $10 (including background check). There are other's here that charge 20-45 PLUS a charge for background check.

My dealer does them for $10 (includes bg check). I have never seen one over about $30 around here. Also, he only charges tax if you bought the gun from him and live in Mississippi.

Around here it is $10 to $25. Most charge a flat $25

My local guy does them for $20 for me since I buy alot of ammo and stuff from him and 25 for most folk.

No charge for background check. Please, it takes five minutes to call it in and I the buyer is the one to actually write the paperwork.

This is in NC

Having a 17 HMr shipped to him this week.

Most of the gun stores around here want $50 (NCIC included), but I found a guy who charges a flat rate of $35 (NCIC included) for any time of firearm no matter the purchase price.

$25-50 but I have a local store who stocks most everything.

I would report them for charging sales tax. They aren't selling you anything taxable.

Exatly, you can't charge tax on a service, only products.

Exatly, you can't charge tax on a service, only products.

It depends on how the transfer is being handled; if they order in parts for you and sell them to you (even if they sell them at cost), they should be charging tax.

If you order in the parts, you pay shipping, and the parts simply ship to them for recordkeeping minutia, then they shouldn't be charging tax.

Reporting somebody to the sales-tax collectors for *charging* tax is unlikely, IMHO, to go anywhere... they may say something about "oh, we'll look into that, he shouldn't be doing that" but it'll get blown off because he's collecting them more money than he's supposed to. I doubt they'll more than round-file the complaint.

I'm not entirely sure how the use-tax law is written, either--it could be that the dealer in question has been made aware (probably by getting burned on a sales tax audit) of some bizarre catch in use-tax law that requires you to pay use-tax on something ordered from out of state (use-tax is the same as sales tax, but you're "on your honor" to report and pay it because there's no method for enforcing it). He might've gotten screwed on a past audit and had to cough up for use tax on behalf of a bunch of customers, and he's not interested in that again.

Still not saying it's legit, but I can see a few reasons a dealer might do things that way.

Reguardless, he shouldn't be charging tax on the $10-25 SERVICE charge for the tranfer. weather or not they are buying and re-selling and charge tax on the sale is irrelevant.

I agree, it shouldn't be taxed, you should simply be paying the FFL for the transfer service.

The only way to make sure that's legit, though, is to make sure that money for the product, never goes through the FFL's hands--if you want something, you buy it, and have it delivered to your FFL for paperwork.

If the FFL buys and resells it, that, by definition, is a taxable sale, at least in Colorado (where Aloharover is located).

If Aloharover is paying the out of state vendor for the part and shipping, and his local FFL still wants to charge tax on it, the local guy is wrong, but chances are, the FFL wants to do things that way to cover his butt with the state--he's probably gotten bad advice (likely from the state, at that!) in the past, too.

Funny how poor the state's advice on dealing with sales tax can be, when they're standing to collect more than they're entitled to (we've got a Colorado sales tax license).

Scott, it is illegal to charge someone tax and keep the money. That is most likely what he is doing.

My FFL has no idea what I pay for guns that he transfers for me. It is a seperate transaction.

Agreed on the first point, and if that's what's going on, yep, it's illegal, and anybody who does that, should be avoided as a businessperson in general, not just as an FFL.

The second point is exactly as it should be--it's nobody else's business.

Sorry to have cluttered things up so much, I think I misunderstood how things were going on.

I'll try to remember to ask about transfer cost the next time I'm at my new favorite gunshop too. :)

No need to be sorry, our transfer laws are a bit strange.

My FFL works out of his house and charges $20 but he always has ammo or a new holster or something else I "need".:D

Funny, that's kinda why I've been procrastinating on visiting the gunshop... if I have enough cash in pocket to make sure whatever I "need" is covered even with sales-tax, I usually have an extra twenty bucks or so that they manage to liberate from my wallet as well.

I've been accused of my place having that effect too, so I guess turnabout's fair play, right?

The reason I started the thread was curiosity. I have not used anyone here in CO to do an actual transfer. Everything I have wanted I buy off the shelf or from one of the local pawn shops. I love pawn shops. I know enough about
weapons to not fear buying something used.
But I haven't had any luck stumbling coming accross a used FAl and the only polace that sells new ones here is way to over priced on all heir guns. So I started looking into transfer fees and thats when I found out that some places are charging a % of the weapon cost and sales tax. Thought this was strange so asked.

And I am looking at getting an FFL. I have all the paper work and would be running it out of the house. I am planning on getting a type 07 as the primary business but also want an 01. After getting the license I will pay for a tax stamp.
I will sell the 1911's and suppresors I make/assemble but also do transfers.
I have the alarm all set up in the garage. Motion detectors, fire, doors, all monitored.
I already have an LLC established here in CO.
Saving up for a new safe to go out there.
Need to check out insurance.

So as part of the research I was just curious what you all were doing for transfers. I am thinking 20-25$. Period.

$35 + $2

that's the going rate at all the FFL's closest to my house. all he asked was if it's a longgun or handgun. if i want to drive 30+ mins west I can get a transfer for $25...not worth it. guess that's what i get for living "inside the beltway"

by the time you take the sale price + shipping + FFL + background + money order fee, the "deal" isn't so much of a deal anymore

I charge $20 regardless of what you have coming in...long gun, handgun, bare receiver...it is all the same to me.

EDIT for NFA...all NFA transfers are $100...these are a ton of paperwork and recordkeeping that are above non NFA...DFW C3s usually charge a percentage(7-12%) of the value of the gun.

What do you charge to transfer NFA weapons?

My dealer here charges $35 for non NFA stuff and I pay it because they're one of the better shops around and theyre close to me. They charge $100 for NFA weapons under $9,000, $150 for anything over $9,000... This seems a bit excessive to me. Is that the going rate for a dealer to transfer NFA items?

My guy will do them for $25..and once my damn CCW gets here it'll be $17.50...and the fee becomes less if you transfer for more than one gun. IE $17.50 for the first one, $10.00 for the next one etc. They know me there and are very good people to deal with! :D

I use a guy that works out of his house. $20 is typical, but he offers a $5 discount for CHL holders, and a $5 discount for NRA members. Firefighters, LEO, military are free.

Most shops around here seem to charge $35-45, plus some add bogus %charges.

I've got two guys that I use here in Sacramento. One, the guy that a ton of people know, love and trust...good old Bob Snellings...I believe it's $25 DROS and $25 long gun transfers through him and $50 handguns, but it's been almost a year since I've used his services, so I'm probably off by a little. Keith would probably know, I know he goes through him as well.

My other guy is an old retired vet who works out of his home. He's a tad more on the transfers, but he'll give give me his cost plus a small percentage on firearms if I buy through him.

Interesting...

I just bought a rifle from Keith and we went to Cordova Guns and the dood behind the counter just points down to a sign that says "PP Transfers between 1-3pm only, no weekends". We were there at 10 of course. Dispite not a single person in there, they wouldn't even look at us. Fawk you.

We buzzed up to Wild Sports. They are not the best priced around, but good guys. $35 out the door for everything. Super easy, in and out. I recommend them for the Sacramento area. Highly.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a big fat rip-off for just being the place where the receivers get shipped?

The sad thing is - that is the best price I have found so far.
