Im looking for a welder to use for the home shop. I will need something that isnt going to kill my pocket, but will get the job done.
I looked at the Lincoln Weld Pak 175HD, 208/230 volt welder.
Do you think this welder would be good for welding brackets (shock brackets, coil buckets, link brackets, etc.) on axles, frames, and other things like welding ends on links and stuff?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah that should work fine, plenty of people here using the 175 class welders for fabrication.
Dont know what your budget is but the hobart ironman 210 is only about $1100 at tractor supply which seems like a hell of a machine.

i have that welder. its worked great for everything i have needed welded so far. last weekend i was rewelding my snow plow bracket on my truck- i was welding 3/8's to 3/8's and it worked great. its a very popular welder.

The new Lincoln Power-Mig 180 is likely a better choice if you have any thoughts of using it for AL somewhere down the road as it comes with built in spool gun capability and its accompaning spool gun is under $200.
Lincoln Power Mig 180C: ~$750
Lincoln Magnum 100SG ~$200
Package: ~$950

You will find it is the Rage at the moment. if anyone can tell me a better welder for the price let me know i doubt it. btw its made by miller and said to produce better beads than just about anything close to it!!! ive been looking at tractor supply co ....$549. in december...670.00 everyday and 10% off alot of the time. oh and the hh180 just wont do it for what i want.
PLEASE somone shoot us a sub $600 price before i buy it at TSC LOL

I have an hh 175, and am pretty happy with it. I do wish there was infinite heat and wire adjustment, but oh well, it works pretty well as is. The welder I used before it was a $2300 Century 275 mig, and I can do cleaner welds with the HH.

I use the Sp-175 which is the version you would get at the welding shops. I researched the difference and all I could come up with was that the duty cyle is lower on the home depot/lowes versions (pro-mig and weldpak). The 175 is a good size it has pleanty of power for vehicle type stuff, I rarely use my highest setting. So far it has done a rollcage, a few bumpers and sliders, 3 axle swaps including a linked front (except for the rod-end bungs, we tigged those). I'll be really suprised if someone can come up with something the 175 is not good for on a truck. Buy the welder, you will like it.

Believe it or not, try Sears on line. Got my HH180 there, they beat everyone elses prices by a fair bit. Think I paid $100 more than the bargain basement reconditioned units on ebay, for a brand new one. If you're willing to try the reconditioned route, give ebay a shot, cheapest way to get into a welder besides strait up used.
