: Cam Break-in Question

All,

I just finished putting my motor back in. I put a new cam in (non-roller) so I need to do the 20 min @ 2000 RPM thing to break it in. Being it's 11:30 @ night I don't want to run it tonight out of respect for the neighbors. But I did fire it up real quick (couldn't help myself). When I started it for that brief secound, it sounded like the valves were off. I can't adjust them with the motor on as I have the mustang EFI upper intake on there. Will it hurt anything if I run the motor for the break-in with the valves off a bit? I'm not running domed pistons or anthing, so the crank isn't going to hit the valves or anything. Thanks!

Are they new lifters ? They could just need oil pressure to pump-up.
Anyway, loose rockers should not be a problem for a short run....better too loose than too tight.

btw...if the "crank hits the valves" you've got way too big of cam, among other problems.

Yeah, new lifters. It could be as you said and they just need to pump up.

Also, that should have read pistons. Too much carb cleaner in the air yesterday.

Thanks.
