: Are these Cruiser parts serviceable?

Hi all

I am about to start building a disk brake front axle assembly so I can swap it into my 40. I have just cleaned up the parts I wanted to use and I have come across a few problems.

Firstly, there is some corrosion damage to the seal surface of the inner axle. As you can see from the pic, it is mostly on the outboard half of the seal surface.

And secondly, there is some corrosion pitting on the seal surface on the bell ends of the axle housing. The pic was taken after I hit it with a wire wheel.

The axle seal seems to have been riding on the good area of the shaft, so I guess a new seal wont get destroyed by the pitting.

Has anyone ever put these parts back into service in a similar condition and how long did the seals last? I have seen posts of people using JB Weld to fill the pitting. How well does that work, and do you think I need to do it?

Any advice, suggestions, info etc. greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

Yes the knuckle housing is pitted and typical; one of the local (and world renown) Cruiser shops (Mudraks) makes sure to grind and polish the knuckle ball so that the lip seal runs over it smoothly and crap does not get under the lip seal and into the knuckle. The slight loss of metal does not compromise the strength of the knuckle and will improve the life of the lip seal, etc.

my thoughts exactly, and cause its the front you're likely to change that axle soon anyways ;)

Come Awn, Jason. You know he drives the Bling Bling through a mud puddle to get the "wheeler" look before cruising the local high school for chicks!

I cleaned up mine with scotch brite buffs in black and brown on my peewee air grinder then polished with 400 grit!
Good Luck
