SM 420 was 48-68
SM 465 was 69-88

You could be right. I know it is one or the other.

SM 420 was phased out in 67. So the 67 tucks still had them but not the 68s

67 was the only year the 420 had a backup light switch.

67 had both the 465 and the 420, both were married to the rockwell case. and the 465s ran until 91 or 92, they were used in the 3/4 and 1-tons of the new body style, as well as the blazers and 1 tons of the old body style

1968 to 1991
Tom

It was offered in almost every GM truck C/K/V/R/P-Chassis series - including the 2 Ton stuff in the early years.

I just picked up an SM465 with an NP205 for a 100.00 and it is absolutely like brand new inside of both, not one scratch on any of the gears. There doesn't even appear to be any wear marks on the teeth even!
These things weigh a TON though!!! Actually 380lbs. for the pair (weighed it myself)but you gotta love'um for building a tranny that's nearly unbreakable, cheap, and plentiful! I can't wait to see how it holds up behind my big block!

Is your 68 GMC a 2WD ?
From what I have seen GM offered the 435's in 2WD's for several years . I don't know what red flagged this option but it was offered in the 1973 and up truckks too . AFAIK it was only in 2WD form.
Tom

MJ . I did not even notice the date on the original post - Ha ,ha ....

The NP435 was an option, but I dont know why you would choose it over the 465. There were both close and wide ratio available, too.
