And the instructions say " Do not mount in a vise " . I will need to fab up some kinda stand. Do any of you guys have a few pics of stands made for this notcher or is everyone just using the drill press?

I just got mine a couple of months ago...the one cage I did with it I clamped it to the corner of my welding table :shaking:
I want to make a mounting bracket like the one that protools sells with a couple of pieces of 2 in. square tubing welded to it in an L shape, then weld a reciever tube to the under side of my welding table so I can set it up real quick if I need it and it wont really be in the way of stuff I might be doing on the table at the same time.
come to think of it...I don't think I got any instructions with mine

I'm still baffled how anyone can use that thing in a drill press for long, sure it works for straight tube fine but try and notch a hoop. Oh well, whatever works. I just have mine bolted horiztonal on the workbench, one bolt and it comes right off. Using a gear reduction drill on it, works great.

I don't run a pro-tools, but still a universal bench top or drill press model. The how anyone can use it in the drill press is easy, for everything that will fit. If it doesn't fit (hits the floor or ceiling) then the part just gets set aside until there are a couple that don't fit and then take the thing out of the drill press and use the hand drill. The thing is that the press is so much easier to use, more stable, and it's a ton easier on a guy's wrists than having to hold the torque back. It's also more powerful...

That's a typo. It should read "Do not mount in a VASE".

Ive used mine in the vice. I couldnt get the thing to line up straight in the drill press and I didnt want to have to set it up and take it down while making a cage. It would be a PITA when doing the foot plates or other stuff. I have mine clamped to a RIDGID pipe stand right now.

Do not mount in a vase,
do not mount to your face,
do not mount on a dish
do not mount with a fish.

I mount mine in the vice and use the 1/2 Millwaukee drill. It seems like it would be a pain in the ass to use the drill press.

I've only ever used a JD2 notcher, but we always just clamped it to the tube and went to work. Was much easier that way than having to hold the tube up.

Right.
Do not mount in a vase,
do not mount to your face,
do not mount on a dish
do not mount with a fish.

did you mount it with a fish?
just out of curiosity, why shouldn't you mount it to a vice? i have a tn-100 that i find mounted to a vice using a milwaukee 1/2" drill works best. i am about due for a new one and was considering a pro tools because of the larger shaft. is the base of the protools aluminum or steel? i was getting a bit of deflection out of the tn-100's al base.

it's alluminum...1/2 in. maybe. I couldn't see it being any more rigid...especially after you build some sort of mounting bracket that backs it up

MY central machine (cheapo) works just fine. It has minimal deflection, and will soon have none. The clamping screw got bent (I dropped it) but I drilled out the threads and welded a nut to the plate and now have a HUGE screw to clamp it down with.
I have used mine in both the drill press adn the vise, If I had a better drill press I would love it in the press, but as it is now I am liking it in the vise better.

Instead of clamping the notcher to the table, I put the tube in a vise and put the notcher on the tube. Then I use the angle finder to set it at 90 degrees and saw away.
