"Joel Randall eases into second.Once again, Summit Truck Style's Mike Shaffer and spotter Lance Clifford were called upon for victory. Today, they earned their second consecutive victory of the season for this series and their third consecutive victory of the year, which refers to last week's victory in Reno at the CalROCS Moon Rocks' event.
"We were full of dread. Then coming down off that last obstacle, when we cleared that wall, we knew it was ours," said Clifford, adding that their win streak began with the addition of their BFG tires and finished up here in Vernal with the Krawler T/A prototype tire. " www.off-road.com has the killer story!!

Ok update....

Day one, we did well, but we could have done better. Day two, we were flawless. Kicked major butt. The rig worked perfect (as usual) and Mike drove like a precision fighter pilot. It was a good day. Our major competition Ken Shupe had a rough day on day two and broke on one obstacle, and rolled on another, which knocked him way out of contention. We ended up running away with first place by a 30 point margin. Scores were something like this for the weekend:

1st: Shaffer: 5 points
2nd: Randall: 35 points
3rd: Paulie: 45 points

Those are not offical scores (except for Shaffer's) but I will have the official scores for everyone posted as soon as RCAA sends them to me.

An additional note is that up until this weekend nobody has ever won more than one RCAA event in one year. And only one person has ever won more than one RCAA event period, and that's Walker Evans. Pretty cool.... :smokin:

Considering his winnings, I would say that beers should be on him! LOL

Congrats guys!

Are you guys at liberty to discuss how much Summit is donating to the team? I'm curious because if I'm reading this correctly; between the winnings and Summit, this looks like it's damn near a new full time job ... or could be.

Our major competition Ken Shupe had a rough day on day two and broke on one obstacle, and rolled on another, which knocked him way out of contention

I guess the cable from Ken's B&M shifter broke on day 2 as soon as he put it in gear at the first obstacle. He couldn't get it out of drive the whole day (I'm sure that didn't help).

Upon investigation he said the cable looks like a clean cut (no apparent fraying) and he doesn't think that break was possible w/o help. I wouldn't call him a sore looser but he thinks someone or thing might have fidgeted with it

Did you guys hear anything like that? Or is this just a story he's telling the friends who weren't there?

Nope, didn't hear anything like that. In fact Moose told me that he had seen it before it broke, and was worried that it would break. And it did..... I really realllllllly doubt anyone would have/did sabotage it. I don't know of anyone out there in that circle who would do such a thing....

Also, it wasn't the first obstacle, it was about the 3rd or 4th, I believe...

As a side note, I check our hubs before EVERY obstacle. We have had a hub mysteriously "unlock" at Farmington and Reno.......

That's what I figured. For those who don't know Ken, he likes to talk, and there's always a lot of junk involved:D

LOL I don't know where the hell he came up with that (ORC). I would never say something lame like that?

Here is how our last obstacle went.... We were sitting pretty, and we knew all we had to do is complete the last obstacle and we would win. We could hit a flag, backup, whatever, but we HAD to finish it. It was a pretty rough obstacle, with a giant hole similar to "Mickey's Hottub" in Moab.

Mike was super nervous. Of course $10,000+ on the line for the weekend, and our quest for the series. Walker Evans came up to him to wish him luck, and Mike asked him, "Walker, you've been under more high stress situations than all of the other competitors combined. How do you deal with it?"

And Walker said, "Mike, let me tell you something.... You don't have anything to worry about. You have the best rig, the best spotter, and you are the best driver. Just drive this damn thing over that obstacle and win this thing!"

Needless to say we got a perfect score on the last obstacle. Thanks, Walker!

Hee hee, sounds like an spisode from Chips. Congrats, so the secret to rockcrawling is Taco Bell and Hawaiian shirts?

Hi Lance, I wanted to add my congratulation to you guys as well. I watched you and Mike and many of the other competitors both days.

If Rock Crawling was an Art (Maybe it is) you guys have perfected it.

Well Done.

As for any funny business going on, I suppose anything is possible, but I believe highly unlikely.

All I saw was a bunch of competitive people who all were very willing to help each other out, with suggestions, and with spare parts when needed.

I went out to watch my friends Rusty and Darrell form Kentucky Offroad compete. They did well and gained a lot of experience. But they didn't win, just as 65 other teams did not win.

No excuses, and no whining; The Summit Truck Style's Mike Shaffer and spotter Lance Clifford were called upon for a victory that was well earned and deserved.

Frank

PS: Lance, I sent 8 rolls of film out to be developed and digitized. I would be happy to email you those photos of your team when I get them back later in the week.

I agree on the comments about Walker. Most of the things I've heard about him I won't believe, Because in the two years that I've known Walker, in has always been a gentleman and a pleasure to be around. He truly wants to see this sport and we who are involved in it succeed.

Rich

PS....Again Congrats to the victors......
