I picked up an old 10" logan a couple weeks ago with lots of accessories but no tooling.

I looked around on Enco's site and found that a quick change is going to cost more than double what I paid for the lathe!

Will a cheaper quick change set work alright for an amature? Having never even used a lathe before I'm a little hesitant to drop a lot of dough on accessories not knowing if I'm going to like/keep it.

I'm thinking about getting a cheaper post with some decent tooling to start off with.

I'm I wasting my money on something like this?

Are you going to be doing enough production type work that requires you to be able to change your tooling quickly? As a self-proclaimed amateur, I don't think so.

buy a tool post and some tool holders and go from there.

Enco is a great source, even their cheap stuff is mostly acceptable (at least as far as lathe tooling is concenred).

The Phase II stuff at Enco is pretty good. The corrsponding set you're looking at is $199 (http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=890-9637&PMPXNO=4882166&PARTPG=INLMK3) at Enco. The concensus over at Practical Machinist (.com) is that the Phase II is consistently ok, while the other stuff on ebay is 50-50 as far as being as good ("ok") as Phase II. A lot of guys proclaim the ebay stuff comes outta the same factory, and some of it even is stamped Phase II.

This ebay store (http://stores.ebay.com/IARSF) sells Phase II stuff, but they don't have any BXA stuff right now...

I think the quick-change tool sets are the schnitz. They make set ups much more enjoyable. Also, the wedge is a lot more sturdy than a piston, but if you find a steal, the piston type should be fine.

Just my $0.02...

Logan sells one for $207. and will mill the t-slot nut to fit your lathe.

I have a tool post, I need a tool holder.

Yeah, I found that Logan sells them yesterday. I'll probably go with them since I need to order some other parts too.
