OK, i'm getting tired of killing my 1/2" guns doing crush sleeves on sterlings.
I'm in the market for a 3/4" gun, but i figured i'd get some insight before jumping into one.
It's primary use will be for crush sleeves on some of the larger axles i do. Maybe some stubborn nut removal on old busted rigs too.
I have a Snap-On truck that hits the shop on friday's. The Cornwell guys show up on Wed.
Anybody have experience with the Snap-on or Cornwell 3/4" guns?
Any other manufacturers make a good dependable gun?
lemme hear it.

I am a diesel mechanic and I love my Ingersol Rand 3/4 drive Titanium impact its a moose on power :smokin: and doesnt weigh all that much either. The only thing that i have had that i couldnt get off with it was a pinion nut. Even then i had to get the shop 1" tire gun and that took at least 2 minutes to get it off. In my personal opinion a good 3/4 impact is a neccasity for any heavy repair work! You said you work on sterlings so i am assuming your a diesel mechanic then dont short change yourself by buying the snap on brand. If you really wanna give the snap on man your money he can order the Ingersol Rand one for you but he (or at least mine) will add a heafty fee to it. I know i bought mine off of ebay for $200 and it was never even used before and works perfect.

sorry, not a diesel mechanic.
I work on small axles like the dana 28, 30, 35 and such.
light truck axles like dana 44, 60, gm 10 and 12 bolts
heavier truck axles like the dana 70, and a few 80's, 14 bolts and sterling 10.25
The heaviest axles i'll see are the eaton fuller 2.5T, a rockwell once in a blue moon, and maybe a dana 110 or 135
I'll definately look into the ingersoll titanium 3/4", i had the ingersoll titanium 1/2" and i loved it, but i use a MAC aw5500 now.
anybody use the chicago pneumatics guns at all?

LoL ha Chicago Pnuematics are complete garbage in my opinion! i have never personally owned one but the shop i work at had all CP 1" drive stuff and a couple 1/2" ones and there not worth your time ours weighted about a ton and the power out put was marginal! and we had to keep sendin them away to get fixed! i would say that if you lookin at somethin you dont plan on usin that much it might be ok for you but i personally dont like spendin money over and over on the same thing when i can buy it once and be done!

we had a 1/2, 3/4, and 1" chicago pneumatic impacts on the farm that were 20 years old with no service, the 1/2 got used daily. We got the CP before our IR that was 10 years newer.

does the ingersoll use the same "quiet tool" technology as the 1/2" guns?
so far, the only tool i own that makes me run for the ear plugs is my snap-on 3050 air hammer. I don't think i could go back to a super noisy twin hammer again.

HOnestly, check the aircat thread. I think any air tool I buy from now on will be theirs.

Never noted a problem crushing the sleeve with the Sterling axles. The 14 bolt FF has always been a fun one for me.
Make sure to use larger air line and air fittings with the IR 3/4 (or any 3/4 for that matter). I find that with 3/8" lines and regular fittings, I don't get any more power out of the 3/4" than I do the 1/2".

CP guns are awesome in terms of longevity. I know a guy who uses a 30+ year old 1/2 drive regularly.... still has more balls than cheap HF impacts and those 99 piece air tool kits.
Snap On impacts are good if you have a TON of air behind them. At work we use two rotary screw compressors, so I am never short on air when I happen to be using one. IMHO, I would only consider IR or Maybe an Aircat.
I cant comment on Aircat longevity, I have only had mine for about a month. The 3/4 gun I use is one of the IR composite guns (no titanium, just composite)... plenty of balls for heavy truck lugs and jobs like that. CP makes a composite 1/.2 gun with 800ftlbs of reverse WORKING torque... which is more than even the 2135ti. That may be one to conider as well

We use 3/4 snap on at work, they get 2.5hr breaks (50min break between 3 shifts) per day Monday-Saturday out of a 24hr day. They are fn' fast guns, but they break left right and center from the constant use (too be expected in that type of environment though - Sterling Transport Trucks)
A lot of my mechanic buddies shit talk snap on air tools, they say IR is a better brand. Honestly, on a typical truck I'll assemble and tighten the front end which on average is 80 bolts. So on a typical day I'll tighten up 3200 bolts myself on my job alone.
Multiply that by 3 shifts thats 9600 bolts tightened on that gun in a single day. I say thats a fair amount of abuse, I like the snap on guns like I said before, problem with them though is that when they break it's almost cheaper to just buy a new one.
I doubt you'll put your gun through so much abuse so I think you'll be good :)
For my money you cant beat the IR composit line of guns got them in 3/8 to 3/4" and they are still strong after a couple of years of daily use i a heavy truck shop.
FWIW even though it was like 600 bucks it was worth it for the 3/4" gun, when the shops 1"guns dont get it i let them barrow mine and it has never let me down.

mh4runner - I get my 14ff sleeves started in the press, then finish em off with the gun. Takes waaaay less time and saves wear and tear on my gun and sockets.
I'm gonna post up a poll, brands included:
Ingersoll Rand
Snap-On
Chicago Pneumatics
Aircat
I guess i'll run it until friday, i will probably make a purchase then.

I voted for the chicago pneumatic because I have a 3/4 that is at least 20 years old. I got it from my Dad who used it at least weekly fixing fork lifts until he retired. And it still kicks ass with zero maintenance.

I've got a CP that is about 25-30 years old and it still works great. Although I now have a year old 1/2'' I bought from Matco that kicks ass. It'll crush a 14 bolt sleeve without much trouble

I did not vote. I would vote other.
Best impact guns are Paoli's.
Every single Formula One team cannot be wrong.

There is no other gun that can handle the abuse and still keep working.
However the price puts it beyond the reach of most folks. in the 1000's of dollars.
I have 1" and 3/4" snap on impacts, they are very good, but are big and heavy. They would suck to use for long periods. My 1/2" craftsman sees lots of use, and I will use a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter until I need the power of the larger impacts.
One thing I have noticed, for consistency I use Nitrogen to power the big impacts. I am guessing that the Nitrogen regulators read more accurately than the regulators on the shop air supply. plus with nitrogen I can crank up the psi if needed. The shop system is max'd out at 175psi.

Voted Aircat. I have their Nitrocat 1/2 and its friggin sweet. With that particular unit I haven't had the need for a 3/4 (yet). I've used about them all, and I like the nitrocat better than the IR, which is next best imo.

I love Snap On tools but there air tools suck, IR air tools are hands down the best and they are cheaper than Snap On and other tool dealers.

x2 I love my IR...I will never go to another brand...Not bad as for price either...I would not cheap out on the central pneumatic crap. Anybody who says this crap works are people who haent used better...It's like people who think they're 1992 honda CRX is the faster car in town...They just dont know any better
