: Experience with L&L??

I am looking for feedback on L&L's customer service, not on their parts.

I installed a 460 in place of a 351 mod about 2 1/2 years ago. I only put about a thousand miles on the swap before the project stalled until just a few weeks ago.

The reasons that I bought from them originally was ease of the swap and their warranty. It saved me the time of searching and scavenging wrecking yards, and I thought if I had any problems they would make good on the warranty.

Well I am having a problem with the driver's side header. The flange is rubbing my front driveshaft, and the yoke is hitting the two outer tubes.

My first contact with them was via their website. It said to wait 24 hours for a reply. After a week, I called them and left a message. After no return call for two days I called again and actually spoke to someone. Their original answer was to return the parts, which obviously takes my truck off the road since it would not have an exhaust system. They agreed to let me send digital pictures of the problem to them.

The only reply I have to date has been to my original contact via their website, which was a one line reply telling me to contact them for a return autorization and send the parts back.(This reply came exactly two weeks after I wrote them.) Yeh like pulling header's is a ten minute job!! (Not to mention making my truck undriveable.)

I replied with an mildly angry note asking them to answer my questions. So far no reply.

I have also called twice. Both times I was told they would get back to me. Nothing yet.

My apologies for the long drawn out post, but wanted to give you folks some details before I asked my questions.

1) Is this typical for L&L?

2) Has anyone else had similiar problems with their headers?

3) They did not offer to pay shipping if they find a problem. Should I request this?

Thanks for any help,

Mike

PS The truck (A '79 F-150) has a 4" suspension lift. Without it, I don't even think the headers would fit.

A few years back I ordered the 460 swap motor mounts.
When I got them , I was shocked how crappy they were made.
Thin gauge metal, and a bushing that would maybe work on a hyundia.....
I sent them back, they took 25% off for "restocking" and it took 3 months to get my refund.....

Obviously I used double stud REAl mounts and brakets instead....those mounts are junk........

Marksman,
I don't know if your experience is par for the course or not. I purchased several items for a big block swap into a '69 F-250 and had a problem with the clutch disc. I needed 1 1/4" 10 spline for an NV 4500 and they sent me 1 1/8" 10 spline. I called them and spoke with Miranda and they sent for the wrong part UPS and had the new one to me in less than 3 days! :D I was pleased with their service.
Part of your problem might be the elapsed time from purchase to complaint and they are dodging you? Don't know.

I've never dealt with them, but i have the same problem if its any consolation. I have the stock 400 installed and my header rubs on the front shaft. Its my beater and could care less. But of your paying money for that stuff i'd be pretty pissed myself. Good luck

but Miranda is who I spoke to, and since then has not returned my calls.

I should add that about a year ago, the first time I thought this project would get back on the road, I called about this problem.

At that time, they looked at my date of purchase and admitted to me over the phone that they had had a problem with some new guys in the shop, and the use of some jigs. Apparently the collectors were in the wrong location and should be tucked in tighter to the block/oil pan.(I mentioned this to them both by phone and in my emails. They don't seem to remember this "problem" now.)

Also, the passenger side header is pushed out to far. I had to grind the frame in two places for tubes to clear. Miranda told me that you should never have to grind the frame to fit the headers.

It was for concerns just like this that I bought from L&L and their lifetime warranty.

Do you think your pinion angle might be more than they planned around? Looks like it's 2" higher than it could be if you rotated it to a more reasonable location.

and I will look into it. The lift was installed when I bought the truck, but the lift company(whose name I can't remember right now) is here in the Salt Lake area, so I will give them a call.

Not sure what bushings are in the control arms.

Still kinda POed, though as I sent them the exact same pictures, and they should be able to pick up on that if you did.

Still waiting to hear from them.

Even if the pinion angle is off, it doesn't allow for articulation and stuffing that side up into the body,

L&L should make good on there product. Lifetime is Lifetime.....

Dont know if they had this disclaimer back then, but now they say you cant run certain models of their headers if you are running a Dana 60 front, or dont have 3-4" suspension lift, or a 3" body lift.

says so right here (http://www.landlproducts.com/ultraflowF250F350.htm)

i just tried to change my oil pan gasket. needless to say with there motor mounts for a 460 into a 86 f250 pickup you cant remove the oil pan. i undid the mounts and cherrypicked the motor up and there still wasnt enuff room.

You'd be lucky to change the pan gasket in any 80-96 Ford without pulling the motor. I know it can be done with the 302 and 351, but the EFI intake usually has to come off, the motor has to be lifted up several inches, and it's still damn tight.

just the factory installed D44. With a four inch suspension lift!

I am just about to take a grinder to the d%&$ things, and a torch if need be. I am sure that is what they want me to do, as it would void their so called warranty.

As of today 5-29-02 it has been exactly one month since my initial attempt to contact them.

No replies to my later emails, just the one liner mentioned above. No return of any phone calls.

It would appear that I paid a premium for poor service and a nice shiny nickle plating. Should of bought the Hooker headers, and replaced them when needed. I could buy four sets for what these cost and done what it took to make them fit, and not worried about damaging them.

I wish I had found a forum like this before I wasted my money!:mad3:

I think there being gay about it, but not all of its there fault, are those stock headers? if there not then its part your fault, have u thought about modifiying the mounts with a welder? maybe reposition the holes....i dunno

but ANY modification voids the warranty. Then again, that is not really an issue any more is it?

They "guarantee" they will fit, but apparently their "guarantee" is as good as their "warranty"!
