: NV4500 crossmember/ driveshaft pics
cruiserbrett 05-19-2002, 09:18 PM I finsihed the NV4500 install behind 305TPI V-8. I mated it to a split case with non-USA parking brake setup(thanks Rick D!)
Here are some shots of the crossmember I built for the NV4500. I used angle iron for the side rails and drilled out the stock skid plate holes for 3/8"-16 and also drilled reliefs for the stock frame rivets. The cross piece is ~1.5"x 3.5" tube. cant remeber the exact dimensions, but it was the thinnest height 1/8" wall tubing I could find. I will eventually build a full skid plate.
The driveshaft is about 18" long...

ouibus 05-19-2002, 11:40 PM Looks good, very clean install. When you said you drilled out the stock skidplate holes, did you retap them to accept the bigger bolts, or did you just put a nut on the inside?
Damn, I only see red X's. Where are the pics?
Mustard Dog 05-20-2002, 07:48 AM I can only see Xs too :(
cruiserbrett 05-20-2002, 07:59 AM i think the pics host is crapping out. Anyone have a good picture host that will aloow for remote hosting? I tried about three places last night, and this worked last night but this is pissing me off. Anyone have a suggestion for a good pic hosting site???
Thanks!
cruiserbrett 05-20-2002, 12:13 PM Maybe this will work...
cruiserbrett 05-20-2002, 12:16 PM And another...
Thanks.....that seems to work.
Cruiser Ken 05-20-2002, 01:10 PM Looks good, but I would be leary of trusting 1/8" tube that is only 1.5" high. If you could make some plate triangles that bolt to the frame and are welded to the cross member, it would beef it up quite a bit. Instead of flat plate triangles you could also just run some rectangular tube from the top of the frame to near the center of your cross member.
cruiserbrett 05-20-2002, 01:19 PM Cruiser Ken,
It's getting the braces when I pull the engine/tranny for the synchro replacement. Fawkin rebuilt tranny and the synchro is bad in third gear. I am also going to incoporate a skid plate into the setup so it will be plenty bomber. As it sits now it will bear the weight of the truck, just not sure about an impact...
The rear axle is in the stock location so the FJ55 springs and S/O will make the driveshaft about 4" longer...
pitter 05-20-2002, 02:26 PM after u do those mods can u post some more pics, my friend will be doing a 350+nv4500 in about 6 months into his SOA FJ40 and would like some pics of how u mounted everything and how it turns out, thanx
Beanz2 05-20-2002, 02:29 PM Brett,
Did you have to cut the tubular crossmember then? I have the exact same setup and the highest I can get the t-case is about 2.5" below the frame rail before the e-brake hits the crossmember. I need to keep my crossmember for the traction bar.
Dave
cruiserbrett 05-20-2002, 03:15 PM Dave,
I cut the tubular crossmeber out all together... It occupied the same space I need the t-case drum to sit in, so out came the sawzall. The bottom of the NV4500 is actually above the frame rails... I think the p.b. drum hangs down about 2" with it cut out, and I banged a bunch out of the tranny tunnel to clear a rib on the case to maximize clearance.
Beanz2 05-20-2002, 03:44 PM Thanks, looks like I'll have to redo my crossmember. Is it the tub that you have to clearance for the t-case rib, or was it the trans tunnel? My tunnel cover has to be redone anyway thanks to a large hole from the previous SM420
Dave
RHINO 05-20-2002, 06:33 PM that looks great !!!! nice job.
