Right now I am looking for a Dana 60 to put under the front of my truck. The one I will probably end up with is out of a 79 Ford. What does it take to totally rebuild one of these?? I haven't really done a whole lot with axles, but have done most everything else when it comes to 4x4's, pulling/rebuilding motors, replacing T-cases, installing lifts, etc. The thought of putting a 20 year old axle in makes me think twice, I want to put this thing in there and forget about it, that's why I'm going with a 60. What does it take to put all new bearings, races, and seals into a 60?? Also what about the kingpins should those be replaced as well?? I want to make this thing like brand new but without spending $4000 to buy one from Dynatrac or Boyces. I'd rather take the time to do it now before I put it into the truck as well. I've read a couple online articles about doing it and it don't sound too bad. What's everyone think??

Go for it. I'm rebuilding a 1980 chevy front 60. It's gonna cost you some $$ - brakes were like $300 (new rotors, calipers, and pads), then all the bearings and seals are about $200 to $250. Seems the kingpin kit is about $100. I don't think you need any special tools - but the inner seals are going to be the pain in your ass.

Thanks for the advice. That's kind of what I was figuring on for the prices, throw in a locker and a R & P and it's around $1500. Add $1000 for the axle and its still way less than spending $4000 on a 'new' one.

Anyone else have any advice??

Give Jim a call:

This is a local shop I got all my stuff from - but he will ship. This guy knows everything about d60's.
