: Garage air compressor, score!
JeepinDoug 02-19-2007, 05:44 PM I've been looking for a better shop compressor, basically quieter than my Briggs and Straton 5hp Craftsman. The B&S is awesome but loud and a PITA if I need to get fuel.
My buddy knew I was looking at the Lowe's Kohler stuff and they had some nice deals on 220V with good numbers.
His neighbor owed him $100 and didn't have the cash so he offered my buddy a Speedaire compressor. My buddy called me and I bought it at the owed price, otherwise he would have thrown it on Craigslist for more.

Swapped out the twistlock plug and fired her up, quiet.........very quiet!
It has decent numbers too, I'm not running a media cabinet so big CFM numbers aren't nessecary but it'll do well for the plasma, impact and some small grinders.

It also had about 25 ft of line, a water seperator and a gauged regulator.

Now I'll mount it to the floor with cushions and plumb it thru some copper lines thru-out the garage.
I didn't get any paper work on it.
Anyone know what kind of pump oil I should use?
I topped it of with some Kendall 30 weight, engine oil, approx 2 oz..
I love a great tool score :D
stock 87 02-19-2007, 05:50 PM Nice Score!!
broncofreak2000 02-19-2007, 05:54 PM Thats a nice find!
frankenfab 02-19-2007, 06:26 PM Anyone know what kind of pump oil I should use?
I'd go buy compressor oil. They have it at most hardware stores. You can also use a 30 W non-detergent oil. Do not use 30 W motor oil.
NICKC 02-19-2007, 06:46 PM from what I was told when I purchased my compressor, the motor oil will 'harm' it if not burn up the cyl. Couldn't tell you the truth behind it but just thought I'd pass on what I was told.
u2slow 02-19-2007, 07:00 PM Nice machine!
I have the same Speedaire compressor (motor/pump) on the 25gal portable tank. Its a real workhorse.

I will do that.
I thought Kendall was one of the non detergent motor oils?
BTW, when I was at Lowes today getting a new plug, they didn't have compressor oil.
I'll go to a good hardware store, not a big franchise.

My local Lowes had 5-10 bottles of that comp. oil last Saturday....maybe it's a regional store issue.
As far as using "regular" motor oil in a compressor, I believe doing that would create some carbon buildup inside the pump and create some restrictions.
Brian1 02-19-2007, 09:22 PM Sweet score! I recently got a very similar Campbell Hausfeld branded compressor (with a Speedaire compressor) for $50 but it needed about $60 in parts (and a belt guard which I bent up with the same brake you have :D ). You will be happy with it.
I did some digging and found that yours is a discontinued product and I couldnt find a manual. If you need replacement parts I found that Grainger is a good place to get them.

Like the typical dummy move I read the side of the tank.......after I posted this thread.
Calls for single viscosity 30 weight, non detergent compressor oil.
The air filter is thick felt mat, McMaster-Carr carries it, the filter had some auto paint on it. The original owner used the compressor to paint cars in his garage as a hobby. All I did was scuff it up with a wire brush to break the cake off.
I already drained the oil tonight and have a terry cloth rag stuffed into the drain hole to soak up residual. I'll grab new oil tomorrow and the floor mounting lags and cushions.
ironpig70 02-19-2007, 10:12 PM have the same unit in my garage. its a nice unit and a great price.
Missouri FJ 02-19-2007, 11:08 PM $100 was a great deal. Nice Work!

I'm pretty sure that "Air Compressor Oil" is nothing more than a trick to get people to pay a few more $ per quart than 30w non-detergent.
Wolf's Head offers both detergent and non in straight 30w, and they are fairly affordably priced.
Whether it's snake oil or not I'm not going to risk blowing up my investment to save me a few bucks on some oil.
MT4Runner 02-20-2007, 08:40 AM Nice Score. My Dad has been running that same compressor for about 15 years. :smokin:
Ford_KTM 02-21-2007, 01:26 AM I just found the same thing!!!!mine was 150 tho...you did better than me i guess....
JeepinDoug 02-21-2007, 09:07 PM My machinist backround had me looking for machine pads for dampening vibrations thru the floor. Then I looked at a box under my work bench and remembered I have a huge assortment of poly bushings, mostly spring eye and sway bar stuff.
Perfect isolators for the tank.

Next is plumbing the right side of my garage and mounting a reel for the left.
JeepinDoug 02-21-2007, 11:41 PM For those that have the same pump.........
Anyone know the proper oil level?
The dip stick is approx 3" long into the pump and has a notch around the bottom. The notch is either the minimum oil or full, it just doesn't seem like enough oil. From empty to the notch is approx 4-6 oz. of oil.
I can't find any info on this in searches.
Have I mentioned lately that "You suck Doug" :flipoff2: I wish I could pay off others debt and get tools in return. Nice score
JeepinDoug 02-22-2007, 12:01 AM My only luck is when I pull my head out of my ass momentarily to hear opportunity knocking.
I went thru some Grainger online stuff and found two pumps by Dayton/Speedaire, same size and format. Oil capacities are 11.5-12 oz..
IIRC, the pump numbers I found on Grainger are 4b426 and 4b427.
fj40charles 02-22-2007, 08:24 PM I'd run some synthetic oil. I use IR brand synthetic oil. Sears sell them.
