: Another " Will it hold up question "
WhiteJeepXJ 02-21-2007, 02:43 PM Im sorry to ask this, but i just want some input on people with similar set up's and there wisdom concerning my present day set up.
The Jeep ( 1991 MJ, 4.0 (stock), 5 Speed tranny (stock), Crawl Box NP 231 Doubler Transfer case going to an NP 231. Front and Rear Square drive shafts (I know, but its a trail rig only) , Ram assist steering, 1 ton high steer, HP Dana 44 front locked, Dana 60 Rear welded ( 5.38 gears ) and... 37 inch MTR's
My question is, if this set up sounds a little too much for the Dana 44 or Dana 60, please tell me what should be taken care of first.
Again, im sorry to ask this, but i am just checking if the components will hold up in there present day form to rock crawling.
Thanks
JDunn 02-21-2007, 02:58 PM The only thing I have that is the same is the D44 with ARB 5.38's and a Rear D60 welded with 5.38's and 37" Krawlers. I did fine all summer but in the last couple of months I have broke 4 axle u-joints in my D44. So I just ordered a set of alloy usa shafts with u-joints. Your D60 will work fine.
braxton357 02-21-2007, 03:11 PM Weld some spicer joints into the shafts and you'll be ok.
mondtster 02-21-2007, 05:00 PM IMHO, part of the equation is how hard it gets driven as well. I've got a buddy who has broken nearly every part in his front D44 on 33" tires multiple times. I also spoke with a friend of my dad's the other day who is running 40" tires on 10 bolt axles (approx. the same as a 44 anyway) in a full size blazer. I asked him about breakage and he indicated that he has broken stuff, but not frequently.
Take your pick. I personally am building a D44 for my truck and plan to run ~37" tires. I think mine will be fine, but I also feel that I drive pretty conservatively as compared to some other people I know.
currupt4130 02-21-2007, 05:09 PM Run moly's and you shouldnt have to worry. I'm runnin moly's with 38's, haven't broke in the past year that I've been wheelin this set up.
alaprima 02-21-2007, 05:31 PM just as refference - also running a similar set up with detroits d44 front currie 9 in back on 37's no probs in about 3 years of use, recently went to Alloy USA's shafts in front just cause i thought i was pushing my luck - but ive never had a problem before.
WhiteJeepXJ 02-21-2007, 08:30 PM I just ordered a set of moly shafts anyways, but I only have the Spicer 760 X joints, is it that common to brake the 760x joints ?? and I plan on welding them in, but not if it would make more since to just buy super joints. My wheeling is moderate to hard wheeling, I choose the line and stick to it unless im bouncing too much, but i never romp on it like many of the hard core guys.
pcoplin 02-21-2007, 09:52 PM Don't weld the joints to alloy axles, you shouldn't need to. I would run more than jsut the stock 760x with the 4.0 with a doubler.
I have a 4 cylinder, and am putting parts together for my 231/D300 doubler right now, and am upgrading to at least the AlloyUSA X-joints for that until the 60 goes in. This past weekend I finally wallowed out the ears on a 30 outer (only stock one I was running :( ) and broke a cap doing it. Forgot I didn't upgrade one. And I'm not hardcore my any means.
It'll save some time on the trail buying beef parts now.
jeepcj75 02-22-2007, 06:58 AM for crawling it will be fine, you'll be fine with that setup, for awhile, even if you hammer down. definitly bring spares, but you will be alright.
mcamish01 02-22-2007, 08:17 AM Cromoly front shafts and joints and you should be fine, just gotta be careful when the D44 is bound up and try not to shockload it.
WhiteJeepXJ 02-22-2007, 09:08 AM Thank you very much guys, especially for not flaming my redundant question. I will make sure to bring my spare stock shafts in case the moly ones happen to shit out. and for the u-joint, I have four of the 760x joints, until i have enough to buy the yukon - CMT joints, i will use the other two for back ups. I guess the key is to not pound to hard on this axle, but for the most part, im pretty sure that moderate crawling wont be a huge concern.
Thanks again :D
