: Mudlite Style Welded Diff Impressions

Around a year ago, I asked around for opinions on welded difs. Mudlite had mentioned, the idea of welding shut 02 teeth on each spider gear, 180 degrees apart. This provides for around 270 degrees of relative rotation between the axle shafts. Kind of a compromise between a spool and an automatic locker. I thought, "What the hell, I´ll try it"...

Anyhoo, at first, I didn´t like it at all and said to myself,
"Self, this thing sucks". :(

However, not the type to give up easily and knowing that John was having a good experience with his, I decided to give it more time. And you know what I´m saying to myself now??
"Self, this thing´s cool!!" ;) :D

I´ve found that adaptaions in driving style were necessary, going real slow and opening up a lot on in-town corners. I also think ahead of the route I´m taking in-town so as to avoid tight corners. And if I do eventually get myself into a bind where I think maybe I could snap an axle or something equally undesireable, I get out an unlock one of the rear hubs. A hassle, but rather infrequent.

When I get my front driveshaft vibe eliminated, I´m still gonna try driving around in front wheel drive with both rear hubs unlocked to see if I like that better. In any case, however, I´m happy to report that I´ll be sticking with this welded diff idea...

Bottom line...

Cheap and effective!!!

Thanks John!!!...

You may not like it in the front. I had a friend try it, and it locks up too much. If you have power steering it may be better.

Where I wrote "spider gear", it should be "side gear". It prolly wouldn´t make a whole lot of functional difference which gears you did, but I just wanted to correct my post...

Thanks John!!

Jusy so that I don't get flak from the BC guys, they have been doing this for several years now. I got the idea from a buddy in Victoria. The IRC guys have had no problems as far as i know with this method.
