: Help!!!!!!!!!
88Mangler 02-22-2007, 08:20 AM Yesterday we decided to take my jeep for a ride to test out all the new perks on it (axles 42s etc) and we decided to do a water crossing that we had done 10000 times before.......well the ground had eroded and it was 4x as deep as normal so i ended up plopping in it and my jeep cutting off
we got it out of the water but now it wont start, we dried off the distributer and the air filter was dry but whenever i go to crank it my starter smokes
also there was a bunch of fluid runnin out from between the engine and transmission.........could this be soot colored water or is it a huge problem
im about to go to the store and buy a new starter and put it on down there and see if i can get it going does anyone have any ideas or advice and is this what is wrong with my jeep or should i even try cranking it
bdicki 02-22-2007, 08:35 AM Change your oil and pull your spark plugs then turn it over.
muddyj 02-22-2007, 10:41 AM as mentioned above, remove the spark plugs, and turn it over a few times to make sure there isn't any water in the cylinders, then change the oil.
it doesn't take much water to mess up an engine, a budy of mine went through some water with his ranger(first time out with it lifted), and stalled the engine. we pulled him out of the water, and when he checked the filter, it "appeared" to be dry. he tried cranking it a few time(didn't bother to take the plugs out), and ended up bending a couple connecting rods. now that he has a new engine in it, he is a lot more cautious(sp) when he comes to a water crossing.
88Mangler 02-22-2007, 10:47 AM so anything about the starter?
bdicki 02-22-2007, 10:58 AM Your not paying attention. Take your spark plugs out and turn it over to get the water out of your cylinders.
Kurtuleas 02-22-2007, 11:06 AM Quit cranking it over before you break something.
Listen to bdicki...you are hydrolocked.
soilantgreen 02-22-2007, 11:30 AM Change your oil and pull your spark plugs then turn it over.
He means of course crank the engine without the plugs in so that the water can get out (tell your friends to stand real close and film it for us!). He's not saying to literally take the engine out and turn it over. Although come to think of it, with the plugs out, this would also work. If you choose this option, film it as well.
With the plugs in, the piston is trying to compress whatever is in the chamber. It doesn't know or care that your air/fuel mixture has been replaced with water/mud. It cannot compress the water that it sucked in while under water. It's surprising how easy it is to bend the connecting rods in this situation. Once the water has been jetted out of your cylinders with sufficient force to pressure wash the underside of your hood or ruin the clothing of everyone within forty feet...or both, you can reinstall the plugs and try again to fire the engine. It will be hard to start but if it does fire up, it may smoke like a SOB for fifteen minutes before getting better.
Don't worry, the neighbors will appreciate you fogging the mosquitoes.

You could just turn the whole Jeep over. That would save you from having to pull the motor.
JEEPGAL 02-22-2007, 06:27 PM I soaked mine in the pond once too. Same results you had. I just let it sit for a few days to let the starter dry out. Started right up. Although I didn't get water into the intake...
bdicki 02-23-2007, 05:16 AM What ever you do don't try to start it by having your friend tow you with his truck and bump start it. At least until you get the water out of it.
88Mangler 02-23-2007, 11:31 AM no yall misunderstood.......the starter burnt out and i couldnt get it to turn over
now that i replaced the starter i changed the oil and pulled the plugs......it turns over just fine and im getting spark but i just cant get the thing to fire up
another thing the thing turns over then there will be a pop and smoke will blow out the carb...........any ideas?
maybe spark plug wires outta order?
Oh and something else.......the intake was dry the entire time.....but there was water in the oil......it was seperated so it never mixed around but still........how could water have gotten in there without the intake getting wet? and i mean like 50% water 50% oil came out
mcamish01 02-23-2007, 11:50 AM If the engine was hot when you dumped it into the water it may have cracked the block, that much water in the oil is not a good sign.

x2 check your radiator for loss of anti freeze.......
cphatmike101 02-23-2007, 10:06 PM x2 check your radiator for loss of anti freeze.......
What they said.
88YJSOA 02-24-2007, 04:33 AM the pop does sound like your plugs are out of order, not that i have ever done that:flipoff2: , if it still isnt running you may need to spend a little more time and effort than a trip to autozone. pull the plugs and crank it again, then leave the plugs out for a day and let the plugs and cylinders dry, didnt check to see where you live but i guess its not cold enough to freeze. buy a chiltons or search the web and get your wires sorted out then mark them for next weekend when you tell your buddies you can now make it through the water you just needed more speed.....
p.s. change the oil again.....
jeepjerdy 02-24-2007, 06:14 AM When I lived in Iceland, I dunked my truck in about 6 different rivers:eek: (we got flooded in on a camping trip and HAD to get out). Slowly but surely she died. The oil pressure switch shorted out, fuel pump crapped out, then I discovered the Grand Canyon in my block. I ended up selling it to an Icelandic kid at a junkyard for $200 b/c they closed the base and we had to leave before I could fix it.:crybaby2: So, yeah, check the block. Good luck with that.:D
88Mangler 02-24-2007, 08:59 AM aight ill do all this and get back to yall

88Mangler 02-25-2007, 12:20 AM we got it running today........replaced the distributer cap rotor and wires and it fired right up
jeepjerdy 02-25-2007, 05:16 AM Good to hear, glad it wasn't something serious for your sake........who am I kidding, I can't lie, I was mostly concerned for the Jeep!!!!:D
88Mangler 03-02-2007, 10:13 AM man no joke.........the oil is a lil gray and so is the power steering fluid....im just gonna have to hit up walmart and change the oil 4320934857 times till it looks right.................along with every other fluid in the whole thing
