: Fuel cell sucking air

I have one of Summit's 20 gallon aluminum fuel cells (sum 290220). The problem is, when I get to about half a tank the pump starts sucking air. Is there a cure for this? Or am I going to have to live with this? I tried calling Summit, I don't think they have a clue of the type of wheeling we do.

i ran one of their cells in my racecar and had a similar problem.

the pick-up was up off the bottom of the tank and stuck between the cell-wall and the foam.

i stuck my arm down in the filler hole and found the tube poking up. my arm was too big to get it the rest of the way to the bottom, so i had a skinny friend (also the driver) put it back under the foam. it worked fine after that.

i would STRONGLY recommend running one of those auto parts store special glass see-thru plastic mesh clean-out-able fuel filters immediately after the fuel cell. after a while, the foam starts breaking down and it gets sucked into the fuel hose. we used to have to clean it out before every race. we also ran a sealed metal-can fuel filter up close to the carb to catch the crap that got by the first filter and any part of the rubber hose that may deteriorate and break loose. i cut one of them open once and was surprised at how much crap was in there.

Damn...Just when I was gonna' pick up the phone and order the Jeg's w/foam 15 gal alumn. cell (basically the same as the Summitt cells...Only the Jegs' is powdercoated)...Anyone else having problems with their foam deteriorating? How about removing the foam entirely? Me's thinks with the sump/supply at the bottom of the tank there shouldn't be too much problem with fuel starvation at angles less than 50deg.

a lot of the dirt trackers around here had the same problem with the foam breaking down. they just pull it out and replace the foam with plastic 1 quart oil jugs. just cut the bottom out of them and wash them well then put them in the tank to keep the gas from sloshing around. mike

Whoa! Cool cheap trick! Are they putting enough jug's in to fill the tank side by side? Sounds like a great baffel!

No hoses. It has a small sump in the center of one of the sides and that is where the pick up is.
