I bought one as my tow rig :D It's the wife's grocery getter when I'm not using it to tow or flogging it. It's the Titanium Silver with the alloys and the rear locker. I didn't want to spend the $$ for the upgrade package just to get the A-trac sytem so I bought the switch afterwards and plugged it in....and it works. Don't spend the money for upgrade package #2 if all you want is the A-Trac system. Just purchase the switch from the dealer for 45 bucks.
It doesn't do too bad in the tow department, I was pulling 75mph up the Fresh Pond grade coming back from the Con. It's nice to have the same power as a 5.0 in a v6.

You would be suprised how much tech there is on this thing already....
A-Trac hack (how to hook it up if you didn't pay for it...)
A-Trac and Rear Locker simultaneously...
Bypassing the Vehicle Stability Control (for two wheel fun...)
Clearancing the front body mounts for bigger tires...
and I could go on with all the companies now making sliders, bumpers, skid plates, lift kits, etc....
it's not too bad for a grocery getter. :D

Yeah, I know. I heard rumor that some yuppies from So-Cal(that's the cool insider way of saying L.A.) went and bought themselves a spiffy new FJ Cruiser with all the bells and whistles and up and decided to try it out the next day on the Rubicon(by themselves, never having even owned a 4-by before). They drove all the way up I-5 and somehow manged to find their way to the trail. By the time they got yarded all the way out, the rig was completely totalled. Any truth to this? Any pics?

I think you're talking about the yellow FJ on the TTORA run last year.... it had all the bells and whistles...sliders, bumpers, winch, 3" lift, 33" tires, etc. Driver had never been off road before and decided to try the Rubicon....After destroying his rear third, breaking one of the rear links, bending the other rear links, denting all the sheet metal...this was what was left:
http://www.norcalttora.com/albums/bob_rubicon_06/aby.jpg
There wasn't a straight piece of sheet metal left on it by the time they made rubicon springs. Marlin himself drug the remains up cadillac hill.
Guy turned it into his insurance and they totalled it. Bentup.com bought it and are planning a SAS for it.

You can blame toyota for that one....he took in some printed advertisement from toyota that said it was "rubicon tested" or "rubicon ready" or something like that, so the insurance had to cover it. It was a bunch of BS ...
There was another FJ on the trail that trip with a guy from toyota and another guy from ARB. They made it through the whole trail without a scratch, but then broke their rear ring gear on cadillac hill. Apparently, that is the weak link on the FJ's.

It's doable with some driving skill, decent spotting and taking your time.
I personally know a guy that took a stock K-5 and another that took a stock full size Bronco through and did the same thing. Turned them into their insurance, both were totaled. Unrelated trips neither guy knew the other, both in the early 80s.

I went to my parents place in Moab this weekend to visit them. I left my FJ-40 at home. While there I decided to run Kane creek in my dads Fj-62 for the hell of it. Later on I took my mothers FJ-Cruiser (Yes, my mothers) on parts of Behind the rocks and I have to admit, I love the little tank.
I have convinced her of the need to put about 3 inches of lift and a bumper via All Pro because I dragged the sliders a few times.

my co worker bought one and dumped a shitload of money into the allpro lift, sliers, and new tires and ARB bumpers. we went out yesterday. he doesnt have his sliders on yet, and could use some more time behind the wheel. considering it carries tires like you would expect, it did pretty well. but a locker will do that.:)

I speak from thousands of miles behind the wheel of an FJ that the ring and pinion is NOT the weak link.

Yes, people can be dumb. And yes Toyota does hire people who have experience in the industry to take the trucks over trails. It would be dumb of them not to hire profesionals in the industry. But our real job is to let any person (that means you) drive the FJ over the trail. In fact, most pictures you see on the website are of people who have never driven the FJ before, NOT of profesional drivers.
Another thing, take one look at the IFS (with near 1.5" inner shafts) and you'll see that that is no excuse for where the FJ goes on the trail. To say that a truck needs a solid axle and 35's to make it over the Rubicon is disregarding the skills of the average driver.
FYI, the FJ has 32" tires stock.

Coulda been these guys:
Well, the Land Cruiser made it through because the Four Dice crew drug them through! We were camped at Buck Saturday night and the Cruiser comes rolling through Sunday morning. They were stuck Saturday night and spent the night in the truck. The girl that was along thought they were going to die. No camping gear and only a couple of power bars. When they passed by they asked how far to the city!! The guy had read about the Con in a mag that said they took a stock FJ through with only a winch and a high lift. Fawk. we told them to turn around and go back the way they came. Nope, on they went. About a half hour later they came back for help as they were stuck on the pivot rock on the Old Sluice. Not being able to leave them we proceeded to guide/drag them through the rest of the trail out Wentworth were our tow rigs were parked. Most of the time they were on the strap behind my rig. At least the guy had some driving skill if not a lot of brains. By the time we were out the list of damage to the Cruiser was as follows:
Bent links front and rear.
Front drive shaft practically broken in two.
All four fender flares gone.
Both running boards destroyed.
No straight sheet metal on either side.
Truck quit running twice and had to be fixed.
The guy was from LA, was headed to SF, then back to LA.

Of course it doesn't need a solid axle to get over the Con'. I think the point Faubrunner was tring to make is that solid axle is the route to take if you want to build a vehicle designed for rockcrawling. (like the JEEP Rubicon) Toyota didn't build the FJ Cruiser to be a rockcrawler, especially since I'm guessing 95% of the people that buy an FJ will never see any type of rockcrawling. Toyota realizes this, so the IFS was the answer since it provides a smoother ride, etc. I'm sure a ton of us would love to see an FJ "Moab" edition with a solid axle thrown under the front end. But it's a pipe dream. Until then, the aftermarket guys will keep us happy.
Please don't go into a dissertation on how IFS can be as good as Solid Axle for rockcrawling, since most of us on this board know it's just not true. (1.5" inner axles or not...) I know this fact from more than 140 thousand miles behind the wheel of my 86 Toyota, both as a IFS rig and as a solid axle rig. In my experience the IFS can be a capable trail rig with lockers and the right driving skills. But it was never as capable or as reliable as the solid axle.

absolutaly thats all im saying! i fit 32s under my runner stock, but im not trying to attempt anything, 1.5 inners are nice but still it is ifs, ppl just shouldnt go out there and buy these things and expect to make it through the con' no problem. With good driving skill and spotters, then yeah its possible. and i think they should get rid of thoes buldging rear tail lights, lol thoes are in the worst spot to get hit by rocks.
