: What Kinda theft device's do you use on your trailer's?
ProJunkRacing 02-22-2007, 07:10 PM Just wondering What Kinda theft device's do you use on your trailer's? Anybody do lojack or anything like that? Or is it just best to get insurance on the trailer?A guy is trying sell me a trailer and the price seems good but just seems fishy.Anything to look for to show it might be stolen? I just wanna know before I buy , as he own's a farm and has no title.I dunno just seems fishy so wanted to look into it before I get into a mess .
Realsquash 02-22-2007, 08:40 PM I thought about getting something that would lock into the hitch but never did. It would be pretty easy for someone to back up to my trailer and take off with it while I'm gone at work. You could run a chain through the wheels and lock it together to prevent a quick theft...

nate379 02-22-2007, 08:52 PM I have a lock for the hitch. They are like $25 at Walmart. Also have insurance. It's like $40 a year for full coverage.
YellowSub1962 02-22-2007, 08:55 PM just call the DMV and tell them you want to purchase the vehicle, but you want ot make sure the VIN is clear and it's the registered owner selling it...
and antitheft devices work much better to prevent your trailers from disappearing :flipoff2:

supervert 02-22-2007, 09:37 PM i lock my jack so it cant be moved up, makes it kinda hard to tow with the hitch 30" up in the air!!!!:smokin:
Soundguy 02-22-2007, 11:53 PM I have a lock that surrounds the bulldog hitch on my trailer so you can't get a ball into it, I then run a piece of large chain through the tires on one side and lock it to the D-ring on the deck. I also remove my safety chains when it's not in use, it's not hard to just drag a trailer down the street by the safety chains. I recently added insurance to my trailer for about $3 a month which makes me feel a lot better about parking it places.
uglyscout 02-23-2007, 07:15 AM I have a lock on the couple and a big fat cable with a round disk lock for the wheels.
Sure you could cut both locks in 3 minutes -- but you'd really have to want it.
bit breaker 02-23-2007, 08:37 AM With respect to a title, I was told by DMV that most trailers never have a title. I thought that was odd, but they just don't care. It is not needed to have it registered either I guess. Unless it was bought from a dealer. I use a locking pin for the hitch, a chain through the axle attached to my jeep or another trailer, and a dog in the yard as security.
MountaineerMac 02-23-2007, 09:41 AM I park mine on the farm backed into the woods where nobody can see it. In addition, the shade keeps the deck and paint in better shape in the long run.

I'm not sure where you are but that couldn't be farther from the truth in CA, AZ, NV, UT, and CO....and those are only the states I have trailered in...
anything that touches public roadways needs a registration as far as I know.
(there are "farm vehicle" exemptions and such, but those are good for like 1 mile from the farm and only in the course of business or something)

He said it didn't need a title to be registered, not that it did not have to be registered.
mcamish01 02-23-2007, 12:13 PM I drop the receiver post out of my gooseneck and built a plate that locks in its place. Makes it pretty difficult to walk off with....
82toycrawler 02-23-2007, 06:06 PM With the new perm. registration in CA it is no longer required to have a Title for a trailer.
You do still have to register the trailer and DMV should be able to check who the registered owner is.
To transfer the trailer just get the transfer of registration without title form from DMV(I think it is green). You should also be able to download the form online - assuming it is in CA.
RustoleumWhite 02-23-2007, 07:59 PM In WA you still need a tittle, unless something brand new came down the pipe I haven't heard about.
For security on my trailer..... a standard lock on the coupler, and thats about it. Helps I live in a pretty darn crime free neighborhood.
Typically I also have the towrig either hooked up to it or parked in front of it, so it would be pretty hard to steal without doing something with it first.
I've been thinking of more security, probably go with one of those gorilla locks that have the u-bolt thing that goes around hitch with a faux ball in the coupler. Although after reading a couple of these threads I may consider something around the tires/wheels as well, something I can use at the trail head as well.
Keep the honest people honest.
Jeepskickass 02-23-2007, 08:10 PM A nut job with a gun, no neighbors to hear the shots, and plenty of space to hide the body. ;)

I just bought my trailer and it was used with a title, I contacted my insurance company about making sure it was covered and they explained that they (Geico) wouldn't list any trailer on a policy that didn't have a title even if it was registered in my name. I added the coverage for $2 or $3 a month and had to give them the VIN to add it to my policy officially.
nissancrawler 02-23-2007, 09:05 PM one of the gorilla locks that goes where the ball does, lock on the coupler itself, chain and lock both sets of wheels. If I know it's going to sit for a while, I take two wheels off one side and put them in the garage.
It helps my neighbor leaves his trailer sit 20' away completely unprotected.
BurnedBronco 02-24-2007, 10:13 AM in IL trailers require titles. nothing is stopping him for applying for a homemade title and retitling it that way.
not much to keep a trailer from getting stolen that isnt a total PITA when you want to use it.
i just leave my tow rig hooked to my trailer at all times. need to steal my tow rig to get my gooseneck off of it.
ProJunkRacing 02-24-2007, 05:34 PM I got a bill of sale I guess I need to get a homemade title.
cocco_78 02-24-2007, 05:58 PM What about security while on the road? I don't like having the tow rig, trailer, and Jeep sitting out in a hotel parking lot all night? I've got a locking hitch pin already so no one steals the adj weight dist hitch setup. But i have a bulldog style hitch with no provision on it for a lock to keep people from unhitching it. I have some heavy duty safety chains on the trailer, I was thinking about padlocking the chains to the hitch on the tow rig? That, and probably backing it into a spot where it would be physically impossible to get the trailer or the jeep on the trailer.
Missouri FJ 02-27-2007, 09:09 PM Lock that fits where the ball goes and chains through the wheels is what I do.
Whit
Big91RustyBucket 02-28-2007, 07:18 AM Yeah I would get the lock that goes around , and over the top of the coupler for a Bull dog Hitch .

chit i have two bumper pull cattle trailers and one 16' utility trailer and until a couple months ago i didnt even have lights on them and they still arent tagged and i pull one at least once a week.. thats here in central texas i think on the lights i have just been lucky
Down&Dirty 03-02-2007, 03:35 PM I bought a trailer a while back. I have the signed notorized title and the DMV won't let me transfer it to my name. I have tried in both NC and SC where I just moved to. Gotta have a bill of sale. Don't even need the title to get everything switched over. Kinda hard to get a bill of sale that is notorized for something you bought almost a year ago. I use a ball lock, and let the air out of a tire. Opps a nail did that for me. I also keep something on it and it stays in my driveway without any problems. I really need to get the axles off and fix that tire.
seattlek5 03-02-2007, 09:26 PM I run a chain through the frame and over to whatever rig is parked next to it and throw a lock on it, that's if there isn't a rig parked in front of the trailer.

That is exactly what I do when I am towing on a trip. And everyting is locked up.

gee, ya think!

Diesel Smoke 03-04-2007, 02:57 AM My Dad looked and looked and looked for something to secure his trailer and nothing met his standards. Then he found this
http://immobilize.com/graphics/immobilizer-trailer.jpg
It's a California Immobilizer. Funny thing is the company is based in Canada, but I guess the Canadian Immobilizer doesn't sound as good. Anyway it's easy to put on and off, very sturdy and works really well. We had one a work trailer at my old job and the owner tried to take off with it one day, without removing the unit. The racket she made just driving around the parking lot was enough to attract plenty of attention. Not to mention the smoking or long black stripe.

Actually have (had) one on my boat trailer. Was out the other day, forgot the key, and was stunned to find that a couple whacks with a hammer allowed the locking mechanism to come free. I had it off within 4 or 5 hits. The U bolt slipped out enough that it came right off.
In one hand I was happy that it did so I could take the boat out (:grinpimp:), but not happy in the other that it was soo easy to remove. :mad3:
Gonna start looking into other locking answers...
Chris 06-07-2007, 01:15 PM A nut job with a gun, no neighbors to hear the shots, and plenty of space to hide the body. ;)
Who? Dave?
I installed steel pipes with locks at my new house so that there is no way to get the trailer off the side of the house without removing the steel pipes. In my last place I epoxied a 1" eye bolt into the house footing and wrapped a 1/2" chain around the axles. It was nearly impossible to get under the trailer to get it unlocked, much less cut it with something.
89breaker 06-07-2007, 06:52 PM Run the VIN through the DMV or get a bill of sale to get a title. Check you state regs on this to be certain you can meet their requirements before you spend the coin.
For security, that and towing ability was one of the main reason I bought a G/N. Not that G/N don't get stolen, but a lot fewer people have the capability.

I got one of these for my GN. I really like it. I have no illusions it will stop a determined person from stealing the trailer, but it will make enough noise so that me and an Para FAL will stop them.
