: 99-01 Ford V10s
PhantomEB 02-24-2007, 10:41 AM Cant afford the CTDs or PSDs but notice that the Superdutys ( which I like as a truck) with the V10s are pretty reasonable price wise, or translation in my budget wise.....
I do understand they would be a pig on gas but how bad? And whats the deal on the V10s, reliability wise? Good things, bad things?
TIA!:smokin:

Just as reliable as the 5.4L because it is just that with two more cylinders.
Any reason yer stoppin' at '01? '99-'04 have the 4R100 automatic which is the one think I don't like about my '02 PSD. '05+ have the 5R110 which people seem to be happier with. Sticks are either the ZF-6, but there are some ZF-5s floatin' around out there.

PhantomEB 02-24-2007, 08:29 PM I am pretty sure the oil companies havent released their fleets for newer years as ones that I have found are HIGH mileage trucks. But for the kinda coin that they are going for, I could have the engine freshened up and fix up the truck as I go along.
Originally was lookin for 97s and older F250s with the 460 but found these 01s with 300 000 Km on them for close to the same price.
techman 02-26-2007, 09:16 PM At the dealership I work at we dont see a lot of problems with v10's.. the biggest issue in the years your looking at was the spark plugs blowing out. I think that you can remedy that by replacing them when you get it, if they havent already been done and make sure that you install them really tight. I have personally seen a v10 that went 45k miles with the original oil and filter. Of course it was knocking and the oil wouldn't drain. But still for those of us who do regular oil changes it is good to know. I personally would reccomend that you get a gasser over a deisel because of the lower price of parts. Of course I am a deisel tech so I shouldnt give that advice. Anyway just remember you can get a complet v10 for around $2500 and a 7.3 or 6.0 will run you from $6000 and up.
Oh yeah the factory filters were gray and said long life on the side so beware of the 45k mile oil change interval.
KNZRHOG 02-26-2007, 09:26 PM I've also heard many stories about the plugs blowing out on the early V10s. I've also heard they added more threads to the cylinder heads in 02. My 02 has 111k on it and runs great. YMMV.

Definately do not try to make them "really tight". Thats one of the main reasons these early motors have problems. Usually the plugs are installed to tightly, it damages the threads, and the plugs slowly work themeselves loose and blow.
Just change the plugs when you get it and torque them to 14ft. lbs. and you shouldn't have any problems.
I've owned 2 of them - a 99 and an 00 - and I'd own another one in a heartbeat.
My dad drives a 99 V10 with 4.30 gears. So far it's been pretty reliable, but he isn't hard on it either. He gets about 12 MPG empty, 11MPG loaded with a 10' camper. I doubt the truck ever goes over 65MPH though  . I think with the $$ you save over a diesel, you could come out pretty good.
JackA 02-27-2007, 10:52 AM I have a 2000 V10 with 125K and have never had any problems. It tows something pretty much every weekend. I get about 10 MPG and alittle less towing. I can pull the hills, big ones, doing a minimum of 65mph most of the time faster. The V10 is a great motor.
RufftyTuffty 02-28-2007, 07:04 PM Ditto here...2000 V10...it pulls and never complains....never overheats....all in all very happy.
The down side is of course the mpg...12-13 DD, 9-10 towing & 7-9 towing w/ cabover....doing 75mph.

65Chevy4x4 02-28-2007, 07:18 PM i'm getting a 01 with all kinds of stuff on it and only 80K miles for 10K and it's a crew cab, short bed, 4x4. Friend has one, it blew out a plug but was under warrenty so it was covered. Last race we got 11MPG towing through tehachapi to bastow with a 4K ranger on a 20ft flatbed. Not bad as I thouhgt we'd get.
Broke That 02-28-2007, 07:46 PM My V-10 is in my RV. A 35' Pace Arrow.
It is by far the smoothest running engine I have ever owned. Its stone reliable and has never caused me any grief.....save for one thing. It IS under powered for its job. I tow a big trailer behind my RV and I don't think Ford had this application in mind when they built it.
Don't get me wrong, I like this power plant, but wish I had a BIG diesel instead.
Rick
Oh, and keeping it under 2k RPM's is the ticket to better mileage...
94redrodeo 03-01-2007, 07:29 PM I am not a fan of the ford V10 but I was talking to the mechanic who works on our fleet at work and He had a Ford econoline shutlle van in for a service 434,000 on the original engine and tranny
PhantomEB 03-02-2007, 06:14 PM Must say thanks!! to all those who have piped up their thoughts here. Sure has given me another option to my budget minded tow rig list.
