: Dana 70 convert to semi float
evilfij 05-20-2002, 10:23 PM How do I convert a FF dana 70 to semi float?
what do I need besides custom axles? What types of hubs should I use? Basically what I plan on is strange axles drilled to 5x6.5" but I need to know what else to scrounge, big bearing 9in ends or . . . ?
Thanks
and don't ask why.
Ron
slowJEEP 05-20-2002, 10:38 PM if can't ask why, can i at least say that it sounds retarded? I'm gettin ready to cut all of the FF parts off of my 70 to put on my 60 so i can run some 35 spline shafts. want the left-overs?
evilfij 05-20-2002, 10:44 PM yes it is somewhat retarded but:
1. It will take more effort than I can ever muster to break a Semi float 35 spline hy-tuff axle
2. I want 5x6.5" and that would be the simplest way to get it unless you have a better idea
Ron
FULLSIZE 05-20-2002, 11:01 PM 5 on 6.5"? old dodge m-37 stuff? you have to explain more on this, i'm not gonna let you get off that easy.................:flipoff2:
evilfij 05-20-2002, 11:24 PM Its a dirty word . . .
starts with an R ends in an R
leaks oil, never runs, lights flicker . . . LOL
Basically I want (but don't need) to build a dana 70 for the rear of a land rover but I want it to be stealth, ie use rover bolt pattern.
I got a 70 for $60 and it is like shinny new so I want to use it.
So HOW DO I CONVERT TO SEMI FLOAT?
Ron
FULLSIZE 05-20-2002, 11:43 PM gonna cost more than its worth. sell it for $150 and take your girl out for dinner!:flipoff2: besides those rovers dont make enough power to turn a dana70:p
evilfij 05-20-2002, 11:52 PM Yes but it was the same price as a 60, like free supersize at McDonalds
You know all us rover owners . . . more money than sense besides parts to build up a rover rear are:
$400 RandP
$600 axles
$600 ARB or $400 for a detroit or trutrac
and it is still a 1930s spiral bevel diff with a D30 size ring gear
I can build the 70 for less and since it all ready has a powerlock it is good to go for a while.
Its going in the wife's truck so thats better than dinner out as far as she is concerned :flipoff2:

evilfij 05-21-2002, 12:12 AM My rover has more power than my scout did.

emsoffroad 05-21-2002, 01:57 AM Just run a semi-float 60. 35 spline, and can be redrilled for your lug pattern. So you give up alittle on the R&P, you planing on running a 500+HP motor? If not sell your D70 and get a SF60.
mytzlflick 05-21-2002, 02:11 AM dana60 or ford nine are probably better choices, look for something in the right width with flanges large enough to be redrilled to your pattern and you will be out less cash.
if you must use the 70 I would convert to a ford large bearing end and custom 35 spline shafts simply because the ford stuff is the most plentifull.
you can order 9 inch ends and weld on it. But I think your aplication would be better with a 9-inch to start with. Then you could sell me the 70 :D :D
BlueJeep 05-21-2002, 05:41 AM Do it just to be different!
Sam's offroad will take a 14 bolt and weld 9" ends on it to use 5 on 5.5 pattern so this wouldn't be too much different. You can get everything you need from Moser, big-bearing 9" ends and 35 spline axles. Don't forget to at least take your grinder to the bottom of the housing to get rid of some of the lip, it's pretty big on the dana 70.
RockRover 05-21-2002, 08:40 AM Ron, Ron, Ron...Your thinking too much man...Keep the 8 lug and when you finally do the front (which you WILL do) then you're not re-inventing the wheel (pun intended) again. You may not be thinking D60 front (or even D44) now, but you will...O'yes you will.
And for what it's worth, just think how cool it would be to see a D70 FF hub sticking out of a steel wheel on a Range Rover!
Dump some 5.89 gears in the pigs and your gonna' be fine with that EFI 3.9L V8...It's only a matter of time before people realize that that alumn. block/alumn.head motor is the ticket for light weight and power (once tweaked a little)...Not to mention that sweet-heart of a T-case...The LT230!

Grandpa Jeep 05-21-2002, 11:27 AM 5 on 6.5? The 8 lug pattern that's on it is 8 on 6.5. Why don't you leave it FF and drill 4 holes to make it 5 on 6.5?
evilfij 05-21-2002, 04:07 PM I know I know. But this one if for the wife's disco. It has to be stealth. 3.54s or 4.10s and a powerlock, thats it, until she gets another driver.
The rangie is getting the eaton/D44 combo 8 lug full width 5.38s yada yada yada.
The disco is going to stay on 32s and I KNOW THE D70 is too much but I want it and with her driving style it does not matter too much how much the diff hangs down. If I leave it FF it the hubs will eat everything she drives by plus it will be too wide.
I figure I can build the D70 for about $500 and sell the stock rear for close to the same.
Ron
road1will 05-21-2002, 04:38 PM ron, youre a cool guy and all but i really do NOT see your reasoning on this at all.
has your wife busted a stock 24 spline axle yet?
32s with stock 24 splines and thoughtful driving will last for a looooooooooooooooooong time.
and if you did want to run the 70, just keep it FF already!!!! i just did a few measurements in the garage, and with a *little* bit of clearancing on the hub opening on the stock LR Series 16" steel wheel, it will clear over the big D70 FF hub.
so you will have the 70 rear end with the FF strength, a hell of a lot less work, and it will look ultra cool.
do you want to run stock discovery wheels? if so, then i could understand your desire for the SF hubs. but who would want to get rid of the big, beautiful hubs of a D70 anyways?
youre crazy, man.
