: the search for FJ80 axles

I'm going to start looking for FJ80 axles with lockers in the local area, maybe next month or so.
when I call the junkyards and ask if they have these, is there any option package or visual cue I can call out to get them to recognize the proper FJ to pull the axles from?
and what's the best years to go for when asking?
(please correct any erroneous info here)
as I understand, the FJ80's came with lockers 92-97 until they went IFS in 98(?)
94+ had rear discs and the front axle can be outfitted with high steering arms.
TIA

93-97, IIRC were the only years with lockers and 93-97 had rear disc brakes and FF axles.

91-92 are basically just wider FJ-60 axles.

There is no code for the lockers that I know of, lots have asked this and I have never seen an answer.

Just ask the person doing the visual if there is a big ass "box" hanging off the pumpkin. That is the electric locking mechanism.

thanks, I'll do that.
how rare of an option is the electric lockers?
Is it like 1 in 100 cruisers or maybe like 1 in 4?
just want to get an idea of my chances when I go hunting

Closer to 1 in 10 versus 1 in 100.

Check www.carparts.com, I considered swapping in a rear FZJ80 axle a few months back (FF, rear disks and an electric locker made it very attractive)and found a LOT of them there; prices range from $900-$1,500 for the whole axle depending on location.

I know of the site, but I'm hoping to find a set locally.
NJ is the land of the yuppie filth, and I see 4-6 FJ80's per day.
somebody has to have crashed one around here...

This switch is to the left of the steering wheel on the dash, kinda low:

Both diffs will have a shield to the left (looking at the flange) hiding an actuator assembly with a wiring harness coming from it, like this:

fitting high steer arms is a matter of swapping to HZJ knuckles and bolting the toyota high steering arms isn't it?
cause the 80 series knuckle is different

HZJ or FZJ knuckles will fit though and the steering arms bolt right onto them......

80 series bell ends are bigger than HZJ ends so the knuckles wont fit, so I have been told.

HZJ75 knuckle housings won't fit an 80 series axle. HZJ80 knuckle housings will, but they're identical to FZJ80 parts :D There are no factory parts to put the steering arms on top of the knuckle housings.

If you can get the left side steering arm off a RHD and the right side arm off a LHD (passenger sides off RHD and LHD) 80 series trucks, you can get forward facing steering arms, but they still attach to the bottom of the knuckle housings.

Morgan's picture shows an 80 Series diff w/ factory locker, but not an 80 Series axle. Right?

The 80 Series axles are square.

That's right, Jim. That's my 55's front axle with an 80-series rear diff.

You're brining knuckles up for Rubithon? Right on!

That's what I thought. The reason I brought it up was I had just read a thread about the width of 80 Series "diffs" that seemed to be talking about "axle" widths. Then I see this thread about 80 Series axles that has a picture of a 55 axle (with the 80 Series diff.) Confused?

I'm a newbie but I know the difference between diffs and axles. :D

Plus, I've listened to some folks talking about using 80 Series axles with 40 series diffs. They want the heavy duty trussed up square axle, bigger birfs and extra width but don't need the high pinon or factory locker. In fact, if anyone has one of these left over after pulling out the precious factory locker third member let me know.

As for Knuckles and Rubithon. It will be great to see you there. I'm looking forward to wheeling the "old" wagon. It's been neglected since I always seem to be wheeling "Ruby" the '93 FZJ80. I was starting to forget how much fun it can be to wheel the manual tranny, carburated beast. That darn 80 Series point and shoot has been spoiling me.
