Anybody got an opinion on air lockers? I want to put one in the rear model 20 on my cj7.

Air lockers are good selectable lockers.. however if your air compressor dies or you bust a cable.. it will leave your diff open for the rest of the trail. If you are looking for a selectable locker.. why not also look at OX Lockers..

Offer the same selectable features but they are cable actuated instead of air.

Why do you need selectability???? spool it or detroit.:D

From the pic of your jeep in your avatar, it looks like it gets a fair amount of street time still. My Jeep does too. I didn't want a spool because I don't really like the way the drive on the street. I had a lunch box and didn't like the unpredictability of it. Detroits are stronger, but still an automatic locker. I installed an ECTED (electric selectable) and I'm very happy with it. IMO, electric is more reliable than air because I find it easier to route wires without having to wory about kinking them. I suppose the same could be said regarding cables (OX) as well. Plus, if you happen to break a wire, they're dead nuts simple to splice. A cable is nearly impossible to splice and air lines can be difficult if you don't have specific parts on hand.

It all comes down to preference but for me a selectable was a great choice. Plus, the ECTED is probably the cheapest selectable on the market.

*edit*I see you changed your avatar pic today. Either way, the street use argument still holds as far as I'm concernend. Of course, that's just my opinion. *edit*

If the cable snaps you can lock or unlock the axle at the diff, unlike with an ARB or other air locker.

ARB all the way. Properly installed and with properly routed lines you will never have an issue. You are going to want to have some form of air compressor for airing back up at the end of the day anyway. Most of those who will tell you of all the problems that you could have with ARB's are people who have never run them. Ask around and talk to people that have actually run ARB's and you will find a very high satisfaction rate.

I'd like to see that...

arb's, 100%. the most proven selectable locker. period.
lot easier to trace a leaking airline than a broken electrical wire.....can hear air!!
if you run the hoses as per instructions and common sence, you will never have an issue. can always put someones on board air into it, then cap off the air line, locked!
the repair connectors ($1.50 from any truckstop) take @2minutes to install, with no tools (quick fit connectors)
air leaks, wires spark, cables frey.
and like i said, arb's are the most proven selectable locker in the world....:flipoff2:

I had the same question running through my head a while back. What locker to run. I decided to see what people were running, why, and what they would do different if they had the money.

Almost everyone said ARB because they were the strongest and most reliable locker available and would not change them out for the world. Those that did not answer ARB said that they wish they had them.

Not to go against what you are saying, but im pretty sure a detroit is more reliable than any selctable locker out there.

Also the detroit is not something to have in a daily driven rig. Its chews tires up quicker than an open diff, and its not very predictable on wet or slick roads. my .02

By the way the ARB is deffinatly the most reliable SLECTABLE locker out there.
