I'm building a 85cj7 for the trail only. With the stuff i do i dont really need that great of a crawl ratio so gearing in the tcase in not all that important to me. I have a 350 and sm465 that i plan on using and i have a dana 300, but since i found a drivers side drop 60 for $150 im obviously going to need a drivers side tcase.

i figure since i'm doing this on the cheap i want to keep it a chevy tcase so i dont have to mess with adaptors or flip kits but im not really familiar with chevy's.

I could pick up a 203 for super cheap but nobody seems to be using these for reasons i dont know. The only other chevy tcase i kind of know about is the 205 but are there any other cases i should check out to keep it on the cheap?

thanks for helping out this chevy newb

203's are big, heavy, chain driven, full time pieces of shit and that is why no one uses them unless they remove the gear reduction box and make a doubler with it.

205's are gear driven but have a super shitty 1.96:1 low range.

Either way they both have passenger side front outputs. I can't think of any driver side drop chevy t cases that will mate to an SM465.

If I remember correctly there is a way of fitting a ford 205 to a 465 using the later 465 to 208 adaptor, I think it involves redrilling? You will also have to install the later long 32 spline output shaft and swapping the input of the 205.

edit: the easiest way would be a doubler to a ford case

My 99 Surburban has a driverside t-case and i believe its a np241 but not positive. the only problem is that the rear output is a slip and i do know that they make SYE kits for it.

JB conversions makes a SYE for the 241

but since i found a drivers side drop 60 for $150

Sell it for big $ and find a P drop Tcase that works for you.

i thought the np241 was only a passenger drop but i guess you're right and there are a good amount of drivers side drops. i'll have to read up on these a bit more

All Chevy t-cases put in before 1988 are p-drop, Im not sure where all this talk of driver drop 203's and Chevy 205's is coming from.

Chevy has the 231, 241, 243, 246, 263 and the HD cases in driver drop. The aftermarket most heavily supports the 241(which isn't saying a whle lot). The low in most of these chain driven, Al/Mag cases is 2.72:1.

www.jbconversions.com Here is what I am putting in my landcruiser. It is fair priced. I have a 383 T350 and a fj40 t case, axles and I am changing to a 205 t-case with the Lomax set up,14 rear D60 front. The price is not bad for what it is I was going to do a 203/205 doubler but I would have to move my rear axle to far back.

Umm, yes it is actually true. He didn't say anything about the later years.

Where the hell did you find a Dana 60 front for $150? And what year of truck did it come out of?

i found the dana 60 in a junkyard in oakham MA. pulled it from a 1990 F350 so its kingpin and high pinion. the guy thought the truck had a d44 in it for some reason.....im guessing he didn't realize it was a f350 because the decals had been ripped off. so yeah i just grabbed that thing and took off before any of his workers enlightened him :D

so does anyone know if any of those drivers side drop tcases will mate to a 465?

Well congratulations on finding that gold mine! I thought you may have gotten it so cheap if it came out of a early 70's or late 60's model truck and those D60's have parts they don't make anymore and I was gonna warn you about that but I guess it doesn't matter, hope your project goes well.

oh yea, have you thought about running a divorced transfer case? You'll have to have a two wheel drive transmission but it will have a little driveshaft between the transmission and transfer case, so you pretty much can turn the transfer case how you need it to fit just you'll have to make a custom crossmember. That's what I did with my NP 200 and my driveshaft angles with the big springs I have are almost paralell to the ground, they're better than the angles on my stock suspension 2500HD

I've seen an '88-newer model 2500 series Chevy truck with a 4 speed manual that had granny low, which I assumed was a SM465, and it had a NP241 t-case..........so my guess would be "yes".

Winnar!

Im running a 90 NP241 out of a K5 in my truck, Im well aware of the carry over for the V3500, V1500/2500 burban's(of which Im using a V2500 32 spline input) and K5's until the last produciton year of 91.
