: drums to discs
Diesel_Cruiser 05-21-2002, 09:19 AM I've searched PBB and ih8mud, and every brake swap i found included an knuckle swap from either a mini truck or a newer style land cruiser.
One of the main reasons (so i've been told) for this knuckle swap (except for the bolt on disc brakes) was that with the newer style knuckles you also get the fine spline birfields, wich are stronger.
But here in europe the late model (mine is 1980) 40 series have drum brakes and fine spline birfields, so swapping the knuckles for stronger birfields would be useless.
I would like to avoid the knuckle swap, because land cruiser parts in Belgium aren't found easily and they cost a fortune.
My plan is to use nissan patrol discs and calipers(wich are cheaper and more available) and then fab up a bracket to hold the caliper wich bolts on with the spindle (I'll use longer bolts) I've attached a pic the red arrows is where i would bolt the bracket.
This seems the easiest way to do it, am i overlooking anything that will make this more difficult than i think??

cruiserbrett 05-21-2002, 09:55 AM It would seem to me that this would work, but there would be a bit of offset necessary for the bracket to clear the rotor if they are similar to L/C rotors...MAF makes(made?) as kit for this with willwood calipers, maybe look there for ideas...
Diesel_Cruiser 05-21-2002, 10:06 AM Checked the MAF site, only found one dizzy picture of the disc kit, anyone ever bought and installed this? Have pictures of it?

You're not overseeing it. If you can fab a bracket that fits (cut'n weld...) and if the patrol rotor clears the big hub (recent hilux discs don't) you're done.
That's probably what I will try in the near future, if I can find cheap discs and calipers.
Good luck !

Stupid frnch jackasS 05-21-2002, 10:53 AM You meant you checked your birfields, and they are fine spline ? That's good news ! :D for the future owner of my '80:rolleyes:
Bye,
Diesel_Cruiser 05-21-2002, 11:30 AM fine spline birfield from my 1980 Bj40
Stupid frnch jackasS 05-21-2002, 12:49 PM Oh yeah ! :smokin::rasta::D

:crybaby2:
Thanks, man
You do have a digital camera, don't you ?
Bye,
Diesel_Cruiser 05-21-2002, 01:00 PM Why don't you swap the knuckles and birfields from your '80 cruiser that you are goin to sell to your own cruiser?? It's not difficult to swap the things.

I don't want to sell an down-rated cruiser. . :rolleyes:I'm rebuiding it not for money but because I love cruisers, and love them wheeling. Plus if I sell it to a friend and I break a birfieldwhile wheeling in his cruiser, I would feel really really bad.
Makes sense, doesn't it ?
Bye,
BJ On Roids 05-21-2002, 04:59 PM the rotor should fit easy enough and when you make the bracket make sure when you construct it it sits in a similar location as it did on the patrol
if it sat on 45 degrees on the back of the rotor, put it back on there
like this:
'O
or if it was front side O'
remember to make sure that your bleed nipple is on the highest part of the caliper ( so it bleeds properly)

Thanx, that was one of the things i needed to know, my buddy own's a patrol 3300 turbodiesel (parts will come of of a similar truck) and I'll have his truck next to mine when i do the swap, I'll try and keep it as much like the patrol as possible.
What about the brake master cilinder, will the stock 1980 Bj40 one do the trick or will i need the master cilinder from the patrol?
I'm planning (if everything goes well in the front) to swap to rear discs too.
