Just like the title reads, what all do I need to convert a '78 Ford HP44 from 5 on 5.5 to 6 on 5.5? From what I've read, the knuckles from a FSJ or Chevy will not bolt onto the Ford inner C's... is that correct? Is it possible to swap Chevy or FSJ hubs/spindles/brakes onto the Ford Knuckles? TIA for any useful info

The FSJ and Chevy knuckles will fit the Ford inner "C's", but the Jeep/Chevy knuckles/spindles are both 6-bolt patterns, while the Fords' are 5-bolt spindle pattern. So the Jeep/Chevy spindles won't bolt on to the Ford knuckles.
A little searching would get you a lot of info--shuch as this

Excellent link, thank you! Searching is what gave me the info that the FSJ/Chevy knuckles won't fit the Ford inner C's, now you're saying they will. The bad thing about info hunting on the internet is that anyone can post about anything regardless of how much they actually know on the topic:shaking:

With that said, this is from the link you posted:

Ford Spindle, 5 bolt disk brakes 76-79. This axles runs the same size bearing as the Chevy / FSJ axle.

So does that mean the Chevy/FSJ 6-lug hub/brakes will fit on the OEM Ford spindle? Swapping over hubs and rotors would definitely be cheaper than sourcing everything from the knuckles out.

Given that the ford hubs and rotors will fit on the FSJ/Chevy spindles and knuckles, I'd say the opposite is true as well.

If you're going to get rid of your ford stuff, I may be interested if the price is right.

The FSJ axles used a "small bearing spindle" from '74-76, and a "large bearing spindle" from '77+. Just based off the bearing parts list in THIS (http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/images/Dana44flatops/BearingsDana44and60_xls_chart.GIF) chart, it looks like I'd have to find stuff from a '74-76 FSJ or '73-76 Chevy to fit my '78 1/2-ton Ford 5-lug D44. So are the people that are swapping on 5-lug Ford stuff only doing it to '74-76 FSJ axles  Am I wrong in looking at the bearing part numbers to decide what will interchange? Seems like the most reasonable way to go about it.

What kind of time frame are you working with? I have the axle; but its buried under about a foot of snow right now and I'm not feeling overly compelled to disassemble it in the cold. Now if you're like me and just in the planning stages and can wait a month or two, we may be able to do something. What all parts are you looking for? The rotors are really rusty and should probably be replaced for safety purposes.

To reiterate, the FSJ/Chevy D44 knuckles WILL fit the Ford D44 inner C's; I installed '76 Chevy knuckles, spindles, calipers, and shortened Chevy axles--inner and outer stub--onto my '79 Ford D44 inner C's. I then installed Ford hubs and rotors onto the Chevy spindles. I see no reason why the '76 FSJ hubs&rotors won't fit the '78 Ford spindles. You would have to use the Ford calipers.

Just find someone that has a chevy or waggy 6 on 5.5 that wants ford stuff and swap everything from the ball joints out.

I have a 76 Cherokee D44 6-lug that I need to convert to 5 on 5.5. E-mail or PM me, I'd be willing to swap yours for mine to solve both problems.
