: center diff replacement

seems that many people say that once you replace the stock carrier units with locking ones (arb detriot spool ect) that the axles are the next weakest point and then the center diff. So has anyone considered replacing the center diff after axle upgrades? I know that I have heard that they are weak but I haven't heard of anyone replacing one. I was browsing expedition exchanges website and they offer a quaife replacement center diff. I have heard that these are pretty good and I was wondering about others opinions. Granted this type of upgrade would be way in the future for me. (Axles rear bumper spare tire carrier first) But I am always looking for ways to spend money that I don't have. So what's the deal on these?

Holly Fin' crap man. That sheiat is WAY too expensive! $650 for axles! $1200 for a center diff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually I've never actually talked with anyone that's broken a center diff...Heard about it, but never actually talked with anyone who has.

I've been trying to get Timm C. to build me a part-time diff (puck) that replaces the center diff. Check the search...This one has been discussed ad-nausium here.

I think you'll grenade many more axles, cvs, and/or non-hypoid R&P setups before you have to worry about the CDL.

Dont know that you would bother swapping out the centre diff for strength issues unless you did actually break it first.

Carnt see how you could break one cause they are very strong units. Way stronger than the upgraded rover axles and rover crown and pinions.

Although I did break mine but that was cause I siezed a front pinion bearing in the front d44 when I first put it in.

I got an LT230 with a blown up diff that I rebuilt. It is actually the weak link in the T-case. Hence the need for the part time conversion.

The issue is on high traction situations you can get enough bind to break one of the cross pins. Also the engagement mechanism is not ideal so you can kinda part engage it (hard to explain, easy to see with one apart) and it does not give the full strength of the unit.

The one that blew up came out of a stock DI where the wife was driving around in diff lock on the pavement. A center pin cracked and the gears ate themselves.

As said before its the land rover 2 piece cross shaft that is weak.
You can buy a piece cross shaft from places like KAM

Well, I *DID* break my center diff.

No fun, lemme tell you.

I have the part-time conversion now that RockRover was talking about.

BTW, I talked to Cooper last night and told him that there were several people who were willing to lay cash on the barrelhead to get them. I told him that I didn't want the 'other guys' stealing him away from me to do the conversion bits, but he seemed to think that he could crank out a half-dozen of them in a day.

I'll bug him about it again for you guys if you really want me to. Remember, every hour he works for you, is a whole day that he doesn't work for me.

See how that works???

Hehe.

Later,

Michael
