: Twin sticks and "front wheel drive" wtf?
fj40guy 05-21-2002, 01:43 PM http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1829870747
The transmission is a bulletproof SM465 4 speed. It has a granny low 1st gear and in 4th with the tall tires will cruise at 75mph at 3000RPM! The transfer case is a Toyota 3spd transfer case with twin sticks to run several combinations of four wheel, two wheel, or front wheel drive. Both the transmission and transfer case were rebuilt to new in 1999.
The "four wheel, two wheel, or front wheel drive" just was a little too funny to pass up on. Not sure on that one.
Still the photo's are worth taking a look.
At this point all I can do is LOOK at trail rigs... still a month away from closing on the new house, dealing with contractors, and wondering if it will ever come together. Lastest is the septic system upgrade being $$$$ to install. Must admit tempted to buy a used $10,000 rock saw... install the septic myself! Then once done, sell the rock saw... or maybe a weekend business for the kids to put them through college? Sorry... one of those days.

The "front wheel drive" is strange. At first I though that maybe he had hubs on the rear axle, but the photos show it isn't so.
cruiserbrett 05-21-2002, 02:10 PM Not many ways to get just front wheel drive with a 3 speed case, with out quickly taking out the rear driveshaft.
WHY do people buy onto the twin stick shifter in a stock landcruiser? Simply removing the shifter gate you have to take out to install the $200 kit will net the SAME results. HI - N - LO in both 2wd and 4wd.
They are usefull with a d300 and other setups where it can net you front wheel only...
Sloan 05-21-2002, 03:53 PM I rode with a guy that had an Atlas I believe that could make it 4 wheel, just front wheel or just rear wheel drive.
wngrog 05-21-2002, 04:09 PM Sure on an Atlas you can knock out the rear and run 2WD FRONT WHEELS ONLY, but on a 3 speed case it plain doens't have the ability.
This guy also said that truck competed in ARCA events
seapotato 05-21-2002, 05:53 PM so hey, you guys would know this, on my bj42 with an 84 h55f and split case, the tcase shifter will travel in a U pattern instead of just an L pattern.
meaning, when it's in 4low, I can move the shifter forward and it feels like it's shifting into 2low.
I haven't crawled under to check yet, but does that sound right?
be cool if it is, then I could put my cheesy locker up there, and weld the rear :smokin:
cheers,
ryan
60seriesguy 05-21-2002, 05:56 PM That truck was built in Arkansas (I don't remember it being built by Avalanche, but it's possible. The guy was definitely from Arkansas)a few years ago, I have some shots of it wheeling at Tellico. Then it was sold (at the tail end of "The Madness" period) to a guy in Utah, and either he moved to Detroit or the truck changed hands again after that. Not a bad truck, but at least the last time the price was outrageous for something like that.
As for being at ARCA, maybe, just like the Princess was, in the parking lot! :)
FIXXXXAH 05-21-2002, 07:11 PM Hey! are those tailights stock on any year fj40? those are SICK. i was planning on just using trailer lights but damn, i like those, any info? thanks,
Matt:rasta:
wngrog 05-21-2002, 07:20 PM Henry,
The guys name is Forest Lovett thaty built and sold that rig for around 40K
Here is his current (as of last year) rig.
Cool truck stock SUA with 38's
woody 05-22-2002, 05:22 AM I emailed the guy asking him about the twin-stick and front wheel drive comment...he hedged it pretty well. He also states in the ad that it has a rear spool, yet the pics show it's a semi-float c-clip axle.
Obviously, he's a driver and not mechanically inclined.

That's the same rig he wheeled this year. He was one of the guys that took Henry Brimmer to Lower 2. Nice rig but he suffered a lot of breakage and burned good daylight in camp making repairs. Broke a rear axle on the way up Slickrock.
60seriesguy 05-22-2002, 08:02 AM Cool truck, I like the low-to-the-ground, trimmed-metal approach!
$40,000! I don't understand how people can get away with prices like that. Maybe I have an over-inflated idea of what my own truck is worth, but I put my truck up for sale for $25,000 and never got a bite! That included the expedition trailer, all spare parts, and a small item worth its weight in gold, a Federal Emmissions Exemption....
Box Rocket 05-22-2002, 10:33 AM I remember that truck from when it was here in Utah. When I looked at it is was an absolute pile! IMO. There was what I thought to be some really scary workmanship on LOTS of the truck. It was one that I would have been very uncomfortable driving. ...... Unless it was a full on ROMP TILL YOU BREAK IT kinda thing:D
Unless some major changes have been made to the thing, I'd avoid it. No way is it worth close to the asking price.
FIXXXXAH 05-22-2002, 07:55 PM C'mon guys, what about those tail lights? are they stock??? if not, what are they off of??
Matt:skull:
Advent Horizon 05-22-2002, 11:33 PM Mark Whatley has a set of those lights that a guy is having him put on an FJ45 wagon for turn signals...drop him a line @ cruiser@mtaonline.net , he'll probably know where you can get a set...Military pedigree, I know that much.
NZFJ40 05-23-2002, 03:15 AM Those are front indicators of a 70 series cruiser. Actually a good upgrade for FJ40s imho. They attached to the side panels rather than the fenders and therefore don't rattle.
You have to drill out the spot welds on the bonnet hock latch, move it back a couple of inches and perform some minor heating and bending of the indicator plastic to mount them. Much brighter than 40 series indicators.

Those lights are standard-issue military lights... the smaller, horizontal rectangle below the red/amer lens is for "blackout drive", and are just very small, almost invisible lights.
When done right, they are very water resistant... You'd have to change out all the bulbs, since military trucks are on a 24v system. When I was in, those lights were on all 2.5 ton, 5 ton, Humvee's, and "Hemmet" trucks.. could prolly get 'em from any DRMO or military supply store.
Personally, I don't like 'em, probably for the same reason I hate Hummers, 'cuz I HAD to drive 'em.. But to each his own..
