View Full Version : Tacos on rockwells?

Anyone running rockwells under their taco yet? I am in the process of locating the control arm brackets, and debating were to put the upper control bracket on the front axle. On top of the diff works great, but raises the trucks height a bit!
Post pics if you got them.
Here is a list of what I will be running:
-Rockwell axles with stock 1 5/8" shaft, u-joint style 6.72 gearing
-Pinion brake F&R
-42" TSL's
-H1 beadlocks with the double beadlock insert (we torched the centers and made new wheel centers out of 3/8" along with the rock rings).
-4 link F & R
-2.5" fox airshocks 18" travel in the front
-Coils in the rear
-Detroit in front, lincoln locked rear
-Full hydrolic steering
-Flat bed removed and new tube added.

This is about where I am at... We have the H1 wheels made, we torched the old centers, and laser cut new ones to accomodate the rockwell 6 lug pattern. We also make a rock ring to stiffen the outer bead lock. Lower control brackets are completely welded in the front, and the uppers are welded to the frame, just debating wher to put them on the axle. One will probably go on the top hat and the other just to the right of it on the axle tube. We haven't started the rear yet, much of the flat bed is going to get hacked and tubed up later. We started groving the TSL tires.... 2 done! Also lockers are in place, welded rear, detroit in front. Sure is nice knowing someone with a laser machine to cut all of these brackets and parts!!! Thanks Mike. Sure is great to know a foreign that is good at tire groovin as well! Thanks Oz!

Here is how the truck sits now, I have the front control arms tacked in place, the lower arms are in place for the rear. Wheel base is 124". To give you an idea of its ride height, I am 6'2", and my dog is a 110 pound yellow lab.
Air shocks came today, hopefully it will sit on its own power within a week or so!

We bent some tube for the front fox air shocks, no pics yet. I plan on bending some tube to mount the seats also in a day or two. I have been busy working and haven't had much time to work out in the garage. I should have some new pics soon.

I finally bent some tube and tied the seats in with the cage. That took a good portion of the day. I also welded some tabs to the front for the air shocks. I need to get some bolts to bolt them on, but the driver side is sitting on the air shock. Here are the pics.....

When I gusseted it, I didn't clean the oil off of it. I had the gas on, I figured that it must have been the oil. It doesn't look pretty, but it will get the job done.

I was thinking the same thing about the heims. Those 'Rocks weigh a ton and with their low gears I'd be a bit nervous about the size of the link tubing & the heims. I'm not bashing, mind you, as I know you gotta run what's in your budget, & I'm looking forward to seeing this rig finished. I think you'll be the first 'Rock-Taco on the trail, right? I know someone else was working on one, but he changed his plans at one point.

The front axle is pushed forward quite a bit!!!! I mounted the UCA's toi the center chunk and the tabs go on both sides of the oilpan. I probably have 8" between the oilpan and the center section.

still under construction...currently having the fenders dovetailed...well the rear is dovetailed already but now i'm replacing the front floors...on this picture, i think we managed to get the tire 43-44"s off the ground and the front tires were still well planted but it looked like the pass side front leaf was about to give since there's no spring clamps on right now :shaking:. hope to see yours up and running soon. i still need a tranny, 'cage, bumpers, sliders...and i'm waiting on my back ordered BBCS.

that guy actualy has one of the most bad ass wheelers around 47" ltbs 60's with longfield cv's on like a wrecked 98 toy those are just his show trucks
Thats Odies wheeler truck is not a show truck. That thing does really well, actually better than we thought, for simple long leaf springs. The 98 tacoma it was wrecked so bad there was nothing left of the body.. A really easy way to go.

The tacoma turned out really well!! It's on 47" ltb swampers and 1 tons.
By the way there is a picture of it in the new toyota 4x4 owners magazine on page 64, the july/august issue.

What size tube are your links? IDK they seem a lil small but...
You need to re-think you ram trust me.
Nice build otherwise :p

Seriously, 2" DOM with 3/8" wall lower links. Busted links on the trail suck :barf:
Cut off that ram mount and make it more like this "=" and less like this "T." I cant spell the words for those symbols :flipoff2: Think about where the pressure from the ram is going.
And sweet mercy beef up the mount too :mr-t:

I'm not sure where to start...
links will fold in short order
that ram is scary
that upper link mount is even scarier
I hope your life Ins is paid up :p

Better re-do the ram mount on you steering link, that looks scary. Definately another entry on robert cannons scary steering site! Think about the force being put into the link from the ram, it should be as parallel to the link as possible from all angles unless you want to bend it real quick. The ram mount on the link needs some more beef if you want it to last long.

The steering mount isn't staying that way, but I want to thank everyone for pointing out the obvious. I didn't want to burn it in until I had it set up the way I wanted.

The upper link mount is 1/4" and has 1/4" gusset, and another brace connecting it to the top loader. That will be strong enough.

Something still looks wrong here. You butt welded the upper link straight to the top of the axle instead of wrapping it around, giving it more surfaces to mount to. Good luck with that, I wouldn't plan on flogging it.

You can't wrap it around because they don't line up. That material is 1/4" thick and at least 1.5" wide.... plenty strong.

Obviously the material wouldn't be perpendicular to the housing, but here are some rough ideas I came up with:
