The 89 4runner I Bought For $500 Has A Serious Transmission Problem, I Have Not Driven This Truck Yet, But Here Are The Issues/Symptoms.

The Problem Is The W56 Transmission Is Stuck In 4th Gear. Also Transfer Case Stuck In 4wd, It Will Shift Between 4hi And 4lo And Neutral But It Won’t Go Into 2hi.
I Have Searched For Hours And Find Nothing About This Problem.
Is This An Uncommon Problem?
Does The Transmission Need To Be In Neutral To Shift From 2wd To 4wd And Back To 2wd?
Is This An Easy Fix Or Does It Mean Replacing The Transmission Or Transfer Case Or Both?
Any Help Or Advise Anyone Can Give Is Greatly Appreciated!

Sounds like a bad tranny and possibly a bad Tcase. Did it get towed with the driveshaft still in place?

he's crossposted there already.

you're in the right place-don't crosspost. transfer case is sometimes a little tricky to get in 2h especially if you're unfamiliar with it-doesn't mean the case is bad. the po probably had the case in neutral because the trans was in gear. you haven't run it, so you can't report any noise. pull the shifter and check the bushing. common problem for these to wear out or break. check to make sure the shift rails are not bound. metal in gear oil? go from there. not a big deal.

I got the transfer case into 2hi and it seems to work correctly. The transmission is still stuck in 4th gear. I took the shifter assy apart and it looks like the shaft stopper? is fried and maybe water/condesation inside.

Problem Solved! :smokin: I drained the tranny and less than a quart of grey sludge came out with gear chunks included!:shaking:
