: 39.5" TSL vs. 38.5" SX vs. 37" MTR
elf_cruiser 05-21-2002, 08:13 PM I know this has been covered before, and before you tell me search, i am not looking for info on these tires. I know all the facts so don't go telling me how great the sidewall is on the SX or how sticky the MTR is, i don't need info, i need your opinion.
Here is my rig - 6 cyl cruiser motor, SM465, NP205, High Angle shafts, and Rockwells w/15x12(bend me over and make me squeal)Stockton steel wheels with NO FREAKIN BEADLOCKS!
I am gonna be entering competitions, and this is a trailer queen so road manners are of no importance at all.
Here are the prices as i have found them shipped to my door-
TSL's - $1100 for 4
SX's - $1120 for 4 (less for the rubber, more for the shipping)
MTR's - $700 for 4
If anyone know where to get these cheaper speak up!
Otherwise what are your opinions???
Thanx-
KAcrawler 05-21-2002, 09:18 PM i think you are a homo but i will sell you my spare if you decide to go 39's
Jayrockn7 05-21-2002, 09:25 PM Man you got the beef, run some damn 42's or 44's. Don't be a puss, get some real meats for those 2.5 tons to throw around!
4x4realm 05-21-2002, 09:32 PM There should be law agenst puting anything smaller than a 39.5 on 2.5 ton's. I'd go 44 boggers.
Scout Dude 05-21-2002, 09:42 PM I think that if you buy anything smaller than 44's with those axles, you will hate yourself later
You went big in the axle dept, now follow up in the tire dept.;)
fcfred 05-21-2002, 09:53 PM I think he is considering tire size limits of the competitions
my vote run the biggest that you can fit within the rules
why go any less?
Kensoffroad 05-21-2002, 11:21 PM Where are you getting 37 MTR's for $700.00 shipped??? Let me know??

TheNerple 05-21-2002, 11:24 PM Hey, I kinda like my 39.5's on my rockwells so they get my vote for the 3 types listed. I bought a set of 39.5's from 4wheelparts for 905 shipped to me, TOTAL. Try to find some one who is wanting some parts from them and they will start making you deals on the more stuff you buy. I also got an ARB and compressor that my friend wanted at a slight discount.
gunracer1 05-22-2002, 06:39 AM i would say at least go with the 42 tsls. they can be bought for about the same money as the others. the 42s will measure under 40" at trail pressures so they will be ok for arca. but if you just have to go 39.5s. high 5 has a set of 38.5 sxs that he's asking 500 for, and two are damn near new, the other 2 are 50%
wngrog 05-22-2002, 07:29 AM Where is the spot for 42's?
Those prices are very high. Shop around.
Bigger is better (especially w/ the 2.5s).
With the 12" wide wheels and no bead locks on something that heavy you will need to run a wide tire. I don't think you could keep the 37-12.50s on the rim w/ less than 15 psi.
Just for prices, I got the TSL 38-12.50 for $178 each delivered.
RockRover 05-22-2002, 07:51 AM Go 44's man...
BTW, I paid $317ea out the door for my 42's.

bigdude 05-22-2002, 08:12 AM the 42s will measure under 40" at trail pressures so they will be ok for arca
I believe they measure horizontally. You may be able to air them down but the horizontal cross section does not change.
elf_cruiser 05-22-2002, 10:09 AM Yeah, the rules are 40" or smaller for RCAA, and that is an important consideration. Bigdude is right, they measure across, so 42's are out of the question. I will eventually buy some 44's once i change my suspension and stretch my wheelbase. 44's are too big for a 97" WB, IMO... Also, i can only swing about $1200 right now, so that is a limitation, too.
newt - i hear ya about the pressure on the 37's, and that is a concern, but from what i hear they don't need a low pressure to stick well... And i will get beadlocks before Xmas...
Looks like the general consensus is for the 39.5", and i am also leaning that way... ECF - what else did you order from them at the same time as the tires?? What would it take to get a good deal??
Thanks for the replies!
Blatant 05-22-2002, 11:35 AM Funny, I'm considering a couple of those myself as my next tire. I wouldn't consider the MT/R (been there, done that). For your axles, I'd go with the 39.5, although I'm a little leery of the sidewall compared to the SX.
Where are you guys getting these prices. The original poster's prices seem more in line with what I'm finding. For instance five (5) 38.5x14.5 SX out the door (shipping, tax, FET) are hitting me for $1,275 and that's the cheapest I've found.
Anyway, for you, my vote goes to the 39.5 TSL.
