soilantgreen 03-06-2007, 06:13 PM 1962 AMC Mighty Mite 1/4 ton built for the Marine Corps between 1959 and 1962. The Mites were meant to be a super lightweight radio jeep that could be air lifted to battle, used for calling in air strikes or artillery, and sometimes destroyed.
The M422 series vehicles feature extensive use of aluminum: the body, engine, transmission/transfer case, and differentials are made of it.
The air cooled V-4 makes 55 hp and 90 pounds of torque from 108 cubic inches. The New Process Model 4300 transmission and transfer case features four forward gears in 4WD with the super low 1st gear unavaialable in 2WD. The Spicer/Dana 27 diffs are modified aluminum castings with power lock lockers, 5.13 gears, and half shafts that pass through the inboard mounted drum brakes on their way to guards that are cast into the arms to protect the spindly little u joints. Quarter elliptical springs at all four corners suspend the Mite's leading and trailing arms. A 24 volt waterproof electrical system and a snorkel allow the 59-1/2 inch high jeep to ford 60 inches of water. A valve pressurizes the crankcase, transmission, and differentials to keep water from getting in during fording operations.
At 71 inches (65 for the M422), the M422A1 is the second shortest jeep ever built. The WWII jeep by comparison has an 80 inch wb. The Mighty Mite is the fastest military jeep ever built according to road tests of the time. I've driven mine at 60 mph. It has a ladder type steel frame that keeps the CoG very low, allowing it to climb sidehills AND operate with either rear wheel missing without dropping the hub to the ground. Two Marines can lift the rear completely off the ground and three can lift the front. I've joked that I'll take it to Moab some year and just carry it over the tougher obstacles.
Less than 4000 were built and it is estimated that less than 100 are left that can start, stop, drive, turn, and engage 4WD. The units that went to Viet-nam were not brought back.

No rust. :flipoff2:

What is it you would like to see exactly? I can look through my files or just go out and shoot the pics you need. Let me know.

Maybe some pics of where/how you stretched the frame, a few inside shots of where the lengthened portion is and what it looks like behind the seats. How much did you stretch it? It looks like it is only stretched between the back of the door opening and the front of where the wheel opening is, right? Thanks.
nofender 03-09-2007, 06:31 AM I originally had it at an 84 inch wheelbase. I added 16 inches to the middle to get a 100 inch wheelbase. I added to the body behind the door opening only. I wanted a CJ6 kind of look to it. We basically cut out the whole middle of the frame and added a piece 16 inches longer. Until last month, it had a full floor in the rear. I welded in the original tailgate as a bulkhead. If you need anything else, let me know. Sorry for the hijack everyone.
Brian1 03-09-2007, 08:39 AM Cool, thanks

soilantgreen 03-10-2007, 08:44 PM Keep the Gladiators coming. Those are sweet.
When did they quit calling them Gladiators and just go with the "J-xxx" thing?
Were they just afraid that calling them "Gladiators" was bringing up images of sweaty half naked men in people's minds?:flipoff2:

69' cj6. I got this thing when I was 16 and of course have been regretting selling it ever since I got rid of it. Had a 231 buick, turbo400, and dana 18. It was the perfect DD.

Got this one shortly after the cj6. Did a frame off build to what is pictured. 70' cj5 again w/ 231, 3spd, dana 20, waggy d44s soa w/ 36s. Was a fun jeep and took me quite a few places. Since then I have been through a few other rigs, but all newer than 75.

Haggar 03-23-2007, 09:36 AM A few pics of my old CJ5.. 1975 Renegade Levi's Edition...
Eventually the body was replaced with a mix of 75, 78, and 81 parts. Stock narrow tracks(30/44), YJ springs, lots of various mechanical updates/improvements. Either running 34 skinny swampers or 35" SSR/Boggers.
Flexed quite well for a narrow tracker...

jpfrk2001 03-28-2009, 03:06 PM I don't think they can get any cleaner then this one. It will stay in the family for generations to come. Bone stock 1973 J4000 with less then 86000 original miles. Never been through a resto. Thats the originall paint and body panels. My Dad retired this truck in 1999 when He bought his Dodge CTD. Ever since then, it sits in the garage and gets driven around town maybe once a month to keep everything lubed up:

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i183/jpfrk/DSC01249.jpg
My Dad did cam it up with an offenhouzer intake and Holley 650 back in the early 80's with a duel exhaust. Primery use was hauling the boat to the lake and hunting. drivetrain is AMC360, 4speed manuel with the granny, I think Dana 20 t-case? rear 5 bolt semifloat D60, front D44(closed knuckle).
JohnnyJ 03-28-2009, 08:00 PM nice old J-truck. Definitely don't see them looking like that.
here's a couple year old picture of my 75 Wag. It's on barn patrol lately. We used to wheel around Michigan in it for a while, but that group kinda vanished so it's on moth balls for now. The tube bumpers are gone. I regretted buying them the moment they showed up.
As I looked through old pics, I think I've lost some; because all I have are some driveway shots.

Johnny Quest 05-28-2009, 06:41 AM  thats huuuuuuuge. did you chop a few inches outta the windshield frame?? oh and what frame did you use??
krayjeeps 06-21-2009, 10:05 PM Yeah I chopped 5 inches out of the windsheild frame, gonna set seats as low as i can, cage ect. Like the low pro look. I used the stock frame just boxed with quarter inch steel and gusset's . Cant see in this pick but I hacked the frame off behind the driver seat and backhalfed with 2in .120 wall DOM. Since this post I have aquired an 89 dually with a strong TBI bigblock and th 400 for the dumpling. Pushin it back in this week to get started again...
