: salisbury axle in a D90
Troutrover 05-21-2002, 10:18 PM OK, I am new at this axle stuff--so don't jump all over me and tell me to get a Dana 44, 60, 70 or ?? I already have a Salisbury rear out of a military 110 and am thinking of putting it in my 90. My questions is how much stronger is it than a standard axle and how much ground clearance do you loose? Is it worth the change?
Thanks
Christian
roverhybrids 05-22-2002, 12:10 AM the actual diff and ring and pinion are way stronger.
The axle shafts are approx 1.5 times stronger.....or so I've heard.
they are the same spline as a standard NAS D90 rear axle but do not neck down.
If you put 35 spline axles and a locker to match you'll have the ultimate LR rear axle.
Guessing I would say you would loose about 2" ground clearance.
Less if you shave the bottom(do a search in gen4x4 for shave)
If you are running 35" or larger tires I'd say it is worth it.
Diesel Jim 05-22-2002, 01:37 AM I've fitted several salisbury axles to the backs of my 90's in the past. they roll straight up and bolt straight in. you have to shorten the propshaft by about 1 3/4" to 2",
If you can, it would be ideal to stick on a disc brake conversion to the axle before you install it, as the drums need constant adjusting of used off road a lot (well, muddy off road)
like roverhybrids says, you lose an inch or 2 of clearance, but as you;ve got such a beefy axle there, then you can run larger tyres which will give you more clearance! :)

RockRover 05-22-2002, 07:41 AM O'man...Here we go again. 1.5x's stronger!? Huh?...Put a mic on the axle and then let's talk. I'm not trying to bash, but I've seen Sal's axles snap on (Jim Little's...Now John P's) 110 on speed bumps...True...Heavier vehicle and such, but man! One blip of the throttle and snap...
I still contend that the Salisbury sucks ass UNLESS you do the following:
1) Shave the pig...The sal hangs about 1/2" LOWER than a standard D60 (because of that damn drain plug ring)...Which means that stock, it's 1/8th" to 3/16's LOWER than a D70!
2) Buy 35 splined axles and hubs.
3) Do a rear disk conversion.
4) Lock the rear with your choice of locker.
All this for what? A "bolt-in" application?
I suppose it's all in what you really want to do with your rig...If you want to run 35's then, IMO, simply upgrade the 24 splined axles....You're gonna' be breakin' them birfields left and right before you ever get close to stressing the rear 24 spline Maxi axles to the breaking point...Twist maybe...Break no.
Not only that, but with a max tire size of 37" your still not ahead in rear ground clearance with that boat anchor of a diff called the Salisbury...
Do what ever float's your boat though...Hell, I will forever be the biggest ass in the world for what I've done to my rig in MANY LR owners eye's. But then again, I perceive that MANY LR owners are asses too! That's why I plan on debuting my rig at the Solihull's Society National Rally in Moab this year...Talk about controversy! Can you imagine? Good thing I gave up drinking...Hee, hee, hee!
Rant over...

yeah... i had one on an earlier 90 of mine once, and i stuck back on (for a laugh) the original 205x16 tyres....
i had about an inch of ground clearance!

Troutrover 05-22-2002, 09:11 AM So which do you consider a better option if I am running 35's, a Salisbury or the stock housing with 35 spline Maxi's, given either one has an ARB installed?
Serious One 05-22-2002, 09:21 AM Hey RockRover,
You and I need to coordinate the timing of our arrivals at the Ralley in Moab. If we plan it right, we can both roll into town together and really get a stink going.
You can lead the way in your 'whatever-your'e-going-to-call-it', and I'll follow up in the rear with the 145 flat towing the Serious One on it's new 4-wheel free-wheeling hub feature. Should be a sweet sight to behold actually!
Seriously, though, when is it and is there anyone else going???
Can you say 'Upper Helldorado'? I knew you could. ;)
Michael
RockRover 05-22-2002, 11:09 AM Trout...30 spline is the max your gonna' get in the stock housing (24 spline)...You can go up to 35 spline (1.5") in the Sals...
If you get the 30 spline option (I would go SG...He has an unconditional money back guarantee on the axles) then you'll have NOTHING to worry about EVER on a D90 with 37's...As long as you run a GBR gear-set.
Serious...I think there is still a debate amongst the Sollilhul group as to whether or not the Rally should be in Moab...Being as though the rally wouldn't actually be "in" Colorado. I haven't reminded them that in 98 the rally was in New Mexico...
Sounds good man! But you see, your much more of a purist in the sense that your 145 and your One has an "intactness" to them...Mine...Well...
And who the heck is gonna' run Upper Helldo with me? Not to mention Proving grounds!
All kidding aside, I think it would be a blast! I believe that the Rally is slated for September...Last I heard that is.
I sure hope there's gonna' be a bunch of DiscoWeb folks there!
Hmmmmmm. Why do I invite conflict? O'well FAWK UM!

Jtisdale 05-22-2002, 03:01 PM Doug-
I'm calling shotgun for Proving Grounds!

RockRover 05-22-2002, 03:04 PM You got it! Now...Who's going to be behind me?
But wouldn't you be missing out on all the LR functions and stuff? You know...How to change a tire in the field...How to change an axle and all that good tech. stuff?
Jtisdale 05-22-2002, 03:51 PM HeHe, yeah at the last NR Brendon and I ditched the social gathering and went and ran Montrose...much more fun!
Johnathan
FrankenRover 05-22-2002, 06:24 PM I am trying to arrange the time off to make the NR. Hope to have the TR 110 done by then, but we will see. Have sold most of the extra stuff from the 90 already (anyone need the 4.0 V8/harness/ECU?), so the new engine and tranny are a done deal. The rolling chassis is only about 1 month away, then transfer all of the D90 front clip and interior stuff over, then add the Hicap bed, have a new rollcage built, paint it, and presto chango - new Too Loong Extreme Rockcrawler.

200 Tdi 05-22-2002, 07:52 PM Dont' bother with the salisbury unless you shave the bottom off it.
Guy in my club, lrocv.com.au , has done it and took off about 1" from the bottom and converted it to disk brake at the same time. Its got maxidrive stuff in it and has no problem running 38" boggers. Front cv's are another story.
When he had 33" swampers my disco with 32's had more diff clearance.

Serious One 05-22-2002, 10:53 PM RockRover,
You won't have to look far in your rear view mirror to see me right up yer tail on Upper Helldorado man!
I'm IN!
Bring it AWN baby. The 145 will be left at the trailhead. ;)
Now I need a spotter!
