304
The 304 in³ (5.0 L) produced 210 hp (157 kW) in 1970-71 and was built starting in 1970. Later models produced less power from the factory, going down yearly. 1972-78 models were rated at 150 hp. It was rated at 130 hp in 1979, the last year it was installed in passenger cars, and 125 hp in 1980-81, the last years it was used in Jeep vehicles.

In my first Jeep (`73 cj5), I could take it up to 6400 before it started floating the valves. Broke a few of the rockers too.

Thats true about mine also, at around 5200 the crappy Delco points ignition would start falling apart. An old Hydro boat engine builder I knew at the time helped me modify an HEI to run in my 304. It woke that bitch right up. :smokin:

Stock AMC 304 and 360 rods are cast, not forged. I wouldn’t run one much over 4,000 RPMs as a general rule, unless you just don’t care when & where it comes unglued.

Now if you have built it to take it, that’s a different matter AMCs can really be built.

Thats just my take on it.

I've had my 401 up over 7,000 RPMs. I really dont recommend this however :D

AMC 401s have forged rods and if you are going to take it over 5,500 RPMs, there is a 4 bolt main system you can install that should keep your bearings from walking.
