: Duramax with problems

Anyone else having problems with their Duramax?

My service engine soon light came on this morning. Took it to the dealer. The tech says my injector pump is going out. 7-10 days before they can get the part. They are not sure they can overnight it. I asked the service rep if this is a common problem. He told me he has only been working there for a couple of months, but this is the second one he has seen. I was supposed to be leaving for Moab on Friday, and camping out of it. 40,000 miles, and pump is going out?:mad3:

First I heard of engine problems, but I keep hearing about trannys blowin up, a dealer told me they were fixing trannys before they left the lot.

Some of the early '01s had injector pump problems but from what I've seen it's not a common problem. Check out this forumns on this page for more details:

FWIW - My Duramax died on me this weekend. I was had the camper on and the trailer/ Jeeo behind it. Turns out the drain cock for the fule filter loosened off and allowed the motor to suck some air in. Tightened the drain cock and primed the pump. Started right up and I was on my way again.

Passed lots of other trucks on the hills. No other problems to report.

My dad worked at the Local GMC Dealer and yeah I have heard of the tranny problems.

I was considering purchasing a new GMC Duramax with the Allison tranny, and was told not to by the service techs. They are replacing entire motors from this combo due to bent pushrods. No pushrod replacement, pull the motor, crate her up and send it back. WOW. He showed me a hand full of pushrods that looked like twizzlers. Very strange indeed.

I just talked to my buddy over there and he said the injector pump problem you discribed was not a common one. He has seen 2 since the latest version of that motor came out. Consider they sold about 100 times that many, that's not a bad number. :D:D:D

This is standard GM practice for anything new... Failure analisys stuff so they can find the problems & address them. When I worked for Cadillac the northstars had bad sealing problems, we were replacing engines for oil pan leaks... they want them back so they can determine the problems & the best way to repair it. Once they figure that out, it'll become a repair thing instead of a replacement I'm sure.

ah now that makes sense!! Finally someone who could explain it to me. Those service tech can take apart any GMC Truck with their eyes closed, but not one of them knew why they were sending the whole mess back. :D

ok, so how many other people are laughing at this?
After all the "It's designed by Isuzu, it's going to kick ass" shit we heard before these things came out... I am quite suprised that the Allison is having that many problems though, GM must have gotten it's fingers in on the design of that too.
Not saying anything is perfect (broken camshaft's in the first Dodges with the Cummins comes to mind) but I have to laugh because of all the hype I heard before they came out.

Oh, BTW... real truck engines are inline

Chevy did get there hands in the redesign of the allison. Since it was made to go in heavy trucks it had nice crisp shifts and it was unnoticable in the heavier trucks. when chevy put them in there trucks they would spin the tires through each gear, so they had allison soften up the shifts. this caused slippage, heat and when customers thought hey i have a allison i can tow in OD no problem. and then they bitch to the dealers when there trannys go south. Chevy SUCKS! :flipoff2:

BTW my next truck is going to have 2 inline 4 cylinders connected via one crank in a F-350 CC DRW :D

Yea yea yea... say whatever you want. If you want real bragging rights go to a dyno and have your truck dyno'd. I've got friends doing 470 HP at the rear wheels in their Cummins. Mine will only do 302 and 670 ft/lbs at the rear wheels.

Sorry to say this.... but Duradud is not the "most powerful" diesel engine. Neither is the Flowerpoke.

Now, only if the idiots at DC would get a clue and make a real crew cab truck.

wow, somebody actually had a pump go out, wow...
So far we have head no pump failures, just some scattered problems to date. The only problem we have had that has been maybe 5 times now, is a problem with the alison, and has to do with a problem in the pump, and had one that was mis-built that we replaced. As for pushrods being bent and so forth, we have not seen any major engine failures yet, and we sell a ton of trucks, granted, the duramax is still hard to get any amout of the untis from the factory. Customers for the most part are happy with the combo, and seem only to be mad about the typical interior problems.

Inline 6 is the most torque-efficient design. That's why they are used in OTR trucks. I worked my way through college as a diesel tech for Ryder. Those big old Cummins M11s and N14s can make upwards of 1,200 to 1,400 ft-lbs of torque if they're tuned to do so, but you hardly ever see one with more than 425 horsepower... and most are in the 300 HP range.

My Dad has 50K on his Duramax and he loves it.

It has not given him any problems and it rarely gets driven without a Gooseneck and his Trackhoe or Dozer on the back.

If I had the $$ I would buy one in a heartbeat and roll this damn loud ass Cummins of mine in the lake.

Granted I can modify my Cummins to outperform the Duramax, but off the shelf, Dad's Duramax KICKS THE SHIT out of my HO 6 speed Cummins.

Also, my Cruiser's straight 6 is louder than his Diesel.

Hey Glo, ask those guys where they got the bent push rods if they send the whole engine back to the plant?

Sounds fishy to me, but I trust you are just repeating what you were told ;)

And they dumpped an additional 5-10k just to bump it up to that. I could go out and buy all the trick shit and end up with 5-600 hp if i had the cash.

$5,000-$10,000 Yeh right!!!

Banks has you guys so snowed over on there price for power numbers (still a great product just too exensive).... For about $1,500 you can have a 24V Cummings sporting 400hp rear wheel and 800lbs rear wheel. Get the Comp Edge and some Stage III injectors...

For you Cummings owners check out www.tdr1.com
Its the like Pirate Board for Cummings owners....over 10,000 paying members..

P.S I love my Cummings.......The Powerjoke is almost as good

Powerjoke? The only joke here is your spelling! Or do you not know that the 5.9 is built by CUMMINS without a G? :flipoff2: :D

As long as I'm replying, while I'm biased towards the PSD, being an IH guy, I have to admit that the original design was not meant to be as heavy use as the B series Cummins. No contest there. If you want to compare to what IH has to offer, grab a DT466 inline 6 diesel. Now THAT is a medium-duty truck engine.

Maybe I should buy a Furd, or a Cheby to put next to the Cummings.
