my transmission is leaking from the seal at the shifter lever and kickdown cable lever. How the hell do i replace the seal? Is it replaceable? i have the pan off and it looks like all the trans guts would have to be pulled to get to whatever seal is right there. Anyone ever have this problem? Its not a slow little drip either its is pouring out just while it sits in the driveway.
i'm sure i won't get many responses but i figured i'd try
thanks

You have to pull the valve body out. pretty easy to do. This should be pretty close - it's how it works on a 904 which is pretty close to a 999

1) remove the bolts holding the kick down lever arm and shifter lever arm
2) remove the 10? bolts that hold the valve body
3) pull the valve body down and forward.
4) then you can tap the seal out from below

You might also have to thread the neutral safty switch out a little to get the valve body to come out.

make sure you chock the wheels, with the valve body out, there is nothing locking the parking lever.

Try carparts.com they sell a lot of individual seals. I rebuilt the whole tranny so it came in the $50 master kit.

This should be it:
Transmission Seal, Manual Shaft Selector Lever; Trans.: Torqueflite/Torque-Command A904(30RH)/9 98(31RH)/999(32RH)
Brand ATP
Part#TO-15
$1.49 Each

One more thought, when you pull the valve body, the middle piston and spring will fall out. So pay attention to which way they go back.

DUDE your the man, i thought i was SOL. I have a spare trans i just tried what you said on. The valve body came out no problem and that does let me see that seal. I'll go ahead and order it today and put it in when it gets here. On the bolts that hold the valve body down those should have red locktite on them right? felt like they did but not sure.
couple more questions if you read this again
Was it hard to rebuild the trans? Have you done it a bunch of times befor or was it your first? Just wondering cause i think the tranny needs to be rebuilt and i was thinking about trying to do it myself. Do you think it would be a better idea just to pay someone to do it since i havb't even had one apart befor. i can replace the seal but i don't know about working on the real inerds of it.
thanks again

Locktite, probabally a good idea the bolts are torqued to something like 20lbs.

I've done 2 autos a TH350 and the 904. It's not too hard, you just have to be carefull to keep things really clean. I didn't have a manual, just got the torque settings and band adjustments off the web.

I don't know if I'd recommend rebuilding yourself or not. Depends on your level of confidence and skill.

Couple of tips
1) take it apart in sub assemblies, don't rip all the innards apart and have a pile on the table. You take the front half out and then the back half - don't separate any of it untill you need to work on each piece - put them back in the case one at a time. (Helps to have a helper)

2) To set the bands you need a torque wrench that goes down to around 6 ft lbs or you need to set the bands by feel.

rebuild kit with all seals gaskets and clutches is about $50. If you need to replace the bands figure on another $50

If you have a spare tranny rebuild that one, that way if you screw it up you can put back in your old one;)
