i have a 1978 ford f250. it is on 35's right now, but i want to put it on 44's. how? there is like no lifts out there for this thing. and also i would like it to clear nicely with no fender rubbing. Also it has a 400m in it right now with the c6 automatic. will a 429 bolt up to this tranny?

first of all, you will prolly need to upgrade your axles, at least gearing. you would prolly need to get a custom suspension for that, or hack some body

it has dana 60 in the rear and in the front
where would i get custom suspension

If it really has a 60 up front (rare) then thats good. You can go find a lift and spend thousands, or just go and get a pair of front spring hangars, use them in the rear for you shackle flip and you can get 4-8" of lift, depending on placement. Youll have to lower the spring mounts in the front as well with custom hangars. I am making mine out of 4" square .250 wall tube. Or hack the fawk outta the fenders and you can probly clear them.

These guys will hook you up man. I had a 76 that I had springs made for and it was under 800 bones for some nice riding stuff.

And yes a 429 will bolt up to your c-6

this thing does have a dana 60 in front, highly doubt its original for all the twin i beam stuff has been cut out from in under it and somebody made there own little homemade lift with leafs and really long shackles.

a dana 60 front was an option on 78 fords. and your truck never had ttb, that started in '80 with the body style change. your truck came with either a dana 44 or 60 front solid axle

it could have come with twin I beams if it was a 2wdr

well it sure looks like a home made deal if you ask me . it has a 400m and i want to get rid of that piece of junk. i have a 390 that is already built in my hotrod truck and i am thinking of putting it or a 429 in it. i have learned now that the 429 will bolt up to the c6 in this truck but will the 390?

390 will not bolt to a 400m c-6, i used to have a 390 that i bulit in a hotrod man i loved them engines

well then i would have rather put the 390 in the big ford for i heard its not a motor you can get a lot of horse power out of and i was shooting for atleast 600hp for my hotrod truck. oh well guess its going to be the 429 goin in the 78

You can get 600hp out of your FE. But it won't be cheap, not by far. Your on the right track in the sense that the 385 class is stupid easy to get big horsepower for comparitively cheap. As far as making 44's fit, don't go all spring, that makes for a shit ride and articulation. Go for a combo of springs and cutting of fenders. Unless this is just a mudbogger that you want tall, then go with a combo of spring and dropped perches like all the original monster trucks did. But there isn't any sense in strapping on 44's untill you have enough motor to make them work and enough drivetrain to hold up to said combo on 600hp+ and 44's. Trust me, I know ;)

Skyjacker makes a 4" & 6" lift for this model truck.
Rough Country makes a 4" lift kit for this model truck.

If you want a tall truck, look into one of the lift kits.

If you want a trail rig with a low center of gravity and 44's, here is my recipe for 42's:

Suspension:
1. Two added springs to the stock front spring pack.
2. Remove the rear factory lift blocks.
3. Add 6" lift cheap Pro-Comp rear springs.
Why: This nets approximately 2" of lift, front and rear (after the rear settles in a month or two). The stiff front and rear spings (and lack of rear blocks) quells rear axle wrap. I've never had any problems with axle wrap.

Body:
1. Cut the fenders, bedsides, and cut off the area under the headlights with a sawzall and an air nibbler.
2. Cut off the two cab mounts behind the front tires. These are the largest obstacle to running large tires without lifting the truck sky-high.
3. Reinforce the floor of the cab with extra metal.
4. Relocate the cab mout the the floor pan.

I have 42's, however 44's would fit.

The final product looks like this:

thats a pretty kool ride but i am wanting to go tall. down here we have new years day run and all like its posted on rednektv.com all it is is a huge mud bog and they say the taller the truck is the better.i like them tall but i dont like this straight up and down drive shaft stuff. i have cut the front fenders out pretty big, but thats about it besides making afront bumper for it.

dont buy a dawkin lift kit they are gay and suck. not to mention expensive. My rear "lift" cost me like 18 bucks at pick n pull (spring hangars) and some time and shit. f-superduty front spring hangar, it bolts off so it is easy enough to pull at the yard. box the shackles. voila its "lifted" 600 horse out of an fe isnt that hard.

you can get the high horsepower of out the FE but like he said it wont be cheap to get that much you would prolly need a super charger

move the front axle foward 4" to clear the cab mounts ont he frame....lift it about 6" or so(depending on how much your willing to cut)

bolt on tires and wheels

then break parts until you spend the money to upgrade the rear axle and stronger parts for the front, regear and get a stronger motor..

have fun
