Two question for you guys.

First........ I think my Lockrite is giving me hell in the front of my 78 F150. It works fine as long as I stay moving in one direction, but if I stop and try to back up (when it happens the most) in a hurry it ratchet and doesn't lock. If I ease into it, it usually won't give me any problems. The place I got it from says they will warrenty it no prob, but I want to make sure it is the problem first. I opened the case and all looks fine right now, I will pull it the rest of the way out tomorrow to inspect furtherm but was hoping someone might of had the same issue.

Second.....upon removal of the cover I found a small piece of metel in the bottom that is the edge of the pinion tooth, guessing this is time for a new set of gears. ???????

Not sure on the pinion tooth (depends on how big the chip is), but that locker behavior does sound like the teeth are worn (rounded off) on the Lockright.

IIRC, broken springs in the locker could cause that also.

I can't honestly say I have any firsthand experience with one (soon will though) but I have read here that some people say if you use an excessively worn carrier it can cause problems- I dont know what they specifically mean by worn though.

The chip is about 1/4" long and 1/8-1/16" tall. right off the top of the tooth. I was talking to a friend about it and he said that he wouldn't worry, but i will see.

LOCKER---I looked at the springs and the pins and they look ok, I did break an axle in my truck about a year ago and when I did it bound up and chipping the edge of the teeth on the locker, so I replaced it and has been fine till now. It seems to do it mostly in reverse after going forwards. If I take off easy it won't do it, but like last weekend I was trying to go backwards on so ice and trying to do it with some force and that is when it did it the worse.

I'd check/replace the thrust washers in the carrier. There's a clearance that you are supposed to have (I think it's in the destructions) or the locker won't work right.
I nuked one jumping it once and it sheared the pins and jammed it up so it was acting like a spool. Which would be fine with me except for the chunks of broke pins and springs floating around in there. When I replaced the pins and springs ($6) it worked fine.
Good luck.

Well i pulled it all the way out, the teeth on one side are shaved a little on the edges. That would be my problem. Now I just need to send it in and get a new one.

Is there anything to look for that would cause it or does it just happen sometimes. The thrust washer look ok, but that doesn't mean they aren't worn a little, will that cause the locker to fail?
