Im sorry to ask this but I need axle info, Im a jeep guy so im just getting started with the ford axles in order to go bigger, im pretty sure you guys would know before any part of the jeep forum.

The axles are from a 1978 ford F250 4x4, 3.54 gears. The front is
a high pinion dana 44 Open knuckle ( manual locking hubs, big brake calipers ) and a FF Dana 60. I have not had time to rip apart the FF 60 to see the spline count yet.

Questions:

1) Is my front axle a HD 44 ? is it worth using ???
2) Is the 60 a 30 spline or 35 spline ? or maybe the 16 spline .....

Extra info, this is going in an XJ, 4.0L, Doubler 231-231 combo, 37x12.5x16 MTR's

Thanks

the d60 is 30 spline
the 44 is as good as any other d44, you will break shafts so buy some yukons

I got about 450 for that axle. Sell it and put money towards a 60 and a stronger rear, or put 35 spline shafts in yours

My plans are to spool the rear with the 30 spline shafts and prob leave the front open, but are the stock shafts going to work with the doubler and 37's with 5.38 gears ??? or will i need to get bigger u-joints or shafts ?

with a detroit and 35s you can break the stock shafts almost at will, open they might last a bit longer
if you convert to fullcircle snap rings the C clips stay in when the yokes distort
the fact that the yokes distort enough to spit the clips is telling you the parts are too small
I havent broken my yukons with 38.5s but I after last years series of breakage on stock axles I am sneaking up on them a bit gentle
