: Axle front pinion offset

I will be shortening a 78 Ford Dana 60. Just cutting the long side down. This means the pinion will not line up with the transfer case. No one seems to have a problem with this, to an extent.

So How much offset is too much?

I would mock it up under your jeep before cutting.

This will help determine any driveshaft interference issues before you make the cut.

I just had to add two inches back to my front 60, because I did not check before I cut. The drive shaft was gonna interfere with the tranny.

My 60 is from a 89 F350, so it has the short driver side shaft. Cutting 8 inches off the long side was too much.

I have a d60 in the front with the long side shortend 5" and with the t-case clocked flat and the srpings not outboard the front shaft rubs the trans. Make sure you put it all together and check your clearances or you could be sorry.

So the only issue I am looking at is drive shaft interference? I have heard some people complain about excessive vibration from the drive shaft angle going from the t-case to the pinion.

thanks for the input.

In your CJ7?

What tranny do you run?

Take some pics, since your getting the camera out for the SF Dana anyways! :D

The driveshaft should only be spinning when in 4x4.

Unless you are doing alot of high speed 4x4ing, vibes should not be a problem.

Should have started with an 86-91 front. I've tried to make the early axles fit, they are better left to the guys that want full width. Good luck with the project.
