Body filler. The new generation of Bondo-type fillers work well and are easy to work with.

Sanding disk. get a fine sanding disk for your grinder and it'll make it smoother than a baby's bottom

small stuff, I have a pistol grip grinder w/ 2" scotch brite disks (roloc type)(various grits).
for big stuff (only if you have lots of air, minimum 80gal) a Dual Action (DA) sander.
sandpaper disks or flappers are too fast/coarse.
Body fillers (less than 1/8" max) and green glaze skim coat.

use some bondo if u can't file the metal down to get rid of the scratches, for the best results do not use a electric or air sander, use a flat board thats about 2 inches wide and get sandin, thats for show quality finish though. and go down to about 400 grit before painting, good luck
