I am wanting to put a auto behind my 2.5l. I was thinking of a 700r4 because I was under the impression that it did need any electronics and also for future engine upgrades I would still be able to use it.I am sure there are adapters for this but I wanted to hear from some guys that have put one behind the 2.5l . Hell any other options would helpful. I want many something that doesnt require electronics to control the tranny. Something that I could pick up cheaply and with proper adapters just bolt on and go.

There was an auto avalible for the 2.5 yj in 95' only. You might try and find one of those trannys. That would be the easiest way.

Why would you want an auto if you've got a manual right now? Do you do a lot of commuting with your Jeep?

If the current AX-5 is out and you want the 700R4 then go for it, I'm just curious why you'd want an auto :)

The auto is alot better on the rocks.. That would be my guess. At least it was for me.
I am running a 904 torque flight behind mine.. It tokk alot of work and research to get it done, But I finally got it going, and I am very pleased with it..
Its been so long, but I think mine came out of an old comanchee or something like that.. Then I had to hook up with Hesco to get a reader so that the computer would read the flex plate.. It was a mess, But Like I said.. I love it and will not go back.

Yes I think a auto is better on the rocks. It is easier for me also and makes the ride smoother. I wont be driving it much on the street , so thats not an issue. Do any of you guys know if the auto in the 95 was computer controlled or not?I currently have a '95 , 2.5l , 103" ,full size HPd44 locked ,full size 9" spooled 4.88's , 35" tires . One reason I was going for the 700r4 is that if I go to a V8 later I could keep the tranny . thanks for the info...I will have to look into the 95 auto thing.:)

With the amount of mods you have already done, you're going to swap out the 4-cyl for the V8. That's the nature of the beast. I'd suggest dealing with the manual until you're ready to swap engines, and then put together a engine/tranny combo that is already set-up to run with each other. Maybe pick-up a whole parts rig and canabilize the wiring if it's computer controlled.

Otherwise you'll have the issues of adapters, torque converters, stall rates, etc. etc. Besides the only V8 that I can think of with the same 60* bolt pattern as the 2.5l is a Caddy Northstar (4.1, 4.5, 4.9). which would be cool but not really practical.

Drop in a sm420. It will handle anything you put it behind and you will love the crawl ratio. My $.02 Of course if I did a 4BT engine swap I would probably run a 700r4 or a TH700.
