: 72 f-250 frame questions
durcrim 03-12-2007, 01:22 PM I've found myself a 72 f-250 frame, complete with a ff d60 rear, lp 44 front, t-case, and manual trans; for $400. just here to get some info on the stuff. what t-case/ trans did these trucks come with, and what gear ratio are the axles most likely?
the guy that owns it said when he took the cab off it had less than 100k, pretty good for an old truck, so hopefully the stuff is all still good. any info is welcome.
also: the frame, trans, and t-case will probably be for sale once I take the axles out, it has been sandblasted and bed lined. I have no idea what just the frame and such would be worth, if anything, so if you know a ballpark, let me know. thanks!
72dave 03-12-2007, 06:51 PM I also have a 72 F-250 yours probably has NP 435,Dana 24T/C,and 4.10 gears. For more info check out fordification.com.

durcrim 03-14-2007, 06:18 PM thanks dave! i joined so I could use the search, haven't posted yet, but you may see me over there. also as durcrim.
anyone else? price sound good? how much is the other stuff worth?
Ramboss429 03-15-2007, 10:20 PM The truck probably has a T18 or T19 for a tranny.
The axles aren't worth anything. If its stock it'll have a LP44 front.
I'd say your better off letting it go and not buying it.
durcrim 03-16-2007, 01:07 PM yeah it is a lp44 front, but up here in mass we don't really rock crawl often, we got mud and sand, so hp isn't a necessity. the ff60 rear end isn't worth anything though?
durcrim 03-18-2007, 12:43 PM nothing??
Ramboss429 03-18-2007, 06:19 PM I'd save my money. The front is a closed knuckle with drums. Not ideal. I am running one right now out of a '75 F250 and it is going bye bye as soon as I can find a HP front.
The rear would be worth 200 at the most if you found someone that really wanted one.
durcrim 03-18-2007, 06:42 PM i suppose a newb question is in order; closed knuckles? obviously something with the steering, but whats the difference? and i am aware of the drums, but nothing with 35's or 37's is meant to stop quickly.
masterbeavis 03-18-2007, 06:49 PM For $400 you can find a complete truck, with better running gear.
loveshackle 03-18-2007, 08:04 PM I wanted another frame to get an extra 2 feet out of for c-ing another Ford. A frame alone here is $25 all day long. A lot can be found for free.
As they said above, I'd leave it be.
durcrim 03-19-2007, 07:07 PM alright thanks guys. you think the rear is worth anything? finding stuff for free around here is rare, so I wouldn't mind spending a couple hundred of axles.
masterbeavis 03-19-2007, 09:45 PM The rear end will be coarse spline, and wont be worth more than $100 in most cases. Leave it be unless its free.
u2slow 03-20-2007, 10:00 AM Coarse-spline (16) is no worse than the 30-spline for strength. Maybe a fluke, but its been stronger for a buddy's crewcab. Good chance of a stock Powr-Lok onthe old coarse versions too.
Front axle could be D44HD which is has larger/stronger axle joints than any of the high-pinion 44s. Drum brakes is the real kicker - which you can work around if you're handy.
72dave 03-20-2007, 04:04 PM I had VERY bad luck with 16 spline axles, went thru at least a dozen.(2 in 1 day). A 14 bolt (1 ton 2WD) bolted right in,only broke 1 axle in it, sounded like a gunshot, took locker with it. Ended up with MUCH larger brakes 13 x 3 and a half. Also upgraded to 1350 u-joints.Chevy parts to make the ford tough.:shaking:
durcrim 03-20-2007, 05:35 PM I take it you can't replace the 16 spline with 35 spline shafts? if the carrier was changed, which it will need anyway, could 35 spline be done, or is it a completly different housing?
lostcj7 03-20-2007, 05:49 PM I would save the money and pass on it. I know it sucks to wait to hold off for a good deal but its really worth it in the end. I was able to find a hp kingpin d60 for $150 from the junkyard in Oakham MA because the guy didn't know what he had.
Also, they're right about the full truck for around that price. I just picked up an 1988 chevy k2500 with only 86,000 miles for 700......runs and drives with a 350, 700r4, and a 14bolt out back.
If you're just looking for axles then spend some time on car-parts.com and you can search all junk yards in an area.....saves alot of time driving around.
