I am narrowing a 9" rear to fit in my TJ, and would like to build a 9" for the front. Can this be done? I tried doing a search but came up with nothing? If this can't be done what would be the best donor(dana 60).

Thanks

You can do it, but you'll probably want the high pinion center section. In the long run, it would probably be about the same cost for you to build one as opposed to just buying it from Currie or something.
Depending on tire size, you could get away with a modified D44 or your current axle up front. D60 are pricey and getting scarce, but that would be next.....

Not hard to do. Currie can send you all the pieces if you want. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I wanted a high clearance housing with inner axles and that was it. I forgot the price but it was fair. They setup the width, set the caster and weld the C's on. Not bad. Just add your outers (probably D44) and be done.

now i really dont understand that swap, unless you go D60 hybrid you still have 297x joints. that really doesnt justify the cost of the swap to me. really same goes for D44 front swap. whats the deal? i say go hybrid, 1 ton or dont swap at all.

Exactly, I feel that the TJ 30 is a great front end compared to the 44. You can put the 60 or even 50 outers on a 9". The 9" cetner section is easier to use for the TJ guys because its real easy to weld the control arm mounts to the housing. Where the 60 center has the cast. Can still be done but not as easy.

That is what I want to do(hybrid) with 1 ton outers. Is there such a thing as a front for 9" or do you just modify a rear housing?

Thanks

you modify a 9 inch rear housing to accept front d60 outers. ypou then have an axleshaft machined to fit the 9 inch inner and d60 outer. currie and another company are making them. you can do it yourself also. with all the brackets on a tj and the allignment of the cs you are prolly better off buying it if you dont know much about it, but you will learn if you do it yourself and you will save money

Yea Sunray does make a quality product but I dont have $4000+ to pay for it.
