: Lifting my GMC

So i bought a 1997 GMC Sierra, 1/2 ton, Z71 4x4 and plan to lift it. It already has a three inch body and i plan on putting on an 8 inch suspension lift as well, with 38x1450 R16 Toyos. Does anyone forsee any problems besides replacing my ball joints about every 3 months?

assuming you do this, you don't need 11 fawking inches of lift to clear 38"s.
Trim your fenders a little and you can easily fit with 6" like I do.

Things go BOOM with little force applied.

do you wheel? if so. solid axle. if not, and your looking for show then ifs lift it. even though SAS still looks better IMO. PLUS get rid of the body lift.

Personally, I'd call that a problem in and of itself. And you can add to that expensive wheel bearings, expensive half-shafts, and maybe even a very expensive center section or two if you actually wheel it with 38s. Plus, you'll eventually tweak your control arms, and the front wheels will ride like this:
/==\
If it's mainly just gonna be a street queen, then the IFS might be OK, but I'd still consider 38s too big, even for a street only rig.

why is IFS so bad?

If you want to find out without spending a fortune for the first-hand knowledge, read this:

And X2; get rid of the body lift (or at least take it down to an inch if you absolutely must have the extra clearance).

Well where to start 40,000 miles on a 6" fabteck lift already changed 3 wheelbering hubs cost $1200 pitnum arm idler arm and tie rods plus steering stabelizer cost $450 plus cost of lift $1400 and my truck wobles like a f**king earthquake

Let me add this is a daily driver abused on street but not taken off road

Because IFS is for mall cruisers and this site isnt about mall cruisers.

the guys at fullsizechevy.com love IFS lifts and waxing their trucks. Take a look.

I didnt care for ifs on any of my trucks. That being said, I wheeled hard with 38's and only 3" of bodylift. Im not afraid to remove a little sheetmetal. Did it hold up? i know (Especially with halftons) seem to detonate them without really doing much. I beat mine pretty hard and never had any major failures, til I hit a telephone pole head on doing 80 and took that and a few trees out...ended up tearing the lca's off ;p

Anyway, Do a straight axle swap. If you want bigger tires on ifs do a bodylift and remove some sheetmetal...38's are the limit for 3/4 ton ifs as far as 1/2 ton i would say 35's maybe 33's with a decent v8. Of course, driver determines most of it.

Thanks for the props, Joe.

You don't have to be tall to bog. But I'm building a mega truck and we run deep mud/water. When I was runnin' 24" of lift and 46s I still got water in the cab of my truck.
But the IFS sucks for hardcore wheelin' besides desert racing. And Ford TTB axles are popular in tough truck racing. Yes, I've seen a high dollar IFS crawler, but he eventually went back to straight axle and his setup was $$$.

this question is impossible to answer......you'll get answers from "nothing, I had all the parts and did all the labor myself" to $8,000.

Do google research on what parts it takes, what axle you will want to use and the level of mechanical skills required and then ask more specific questions.

good luck!
