: fitting VSS to a different rear axle
broncorob 05-23-2002, 06:36 AM I've got a '94 bronco with the E4OD automatic. The truck senses speed by a pick up in the rear differential. The ring gear has an exciter ring which sends the signal. Among other things this information is used to shift the tranny. Has anyone taken an axle without the speed sensor and fitted one to it.
Specifically I'm thinking of taking a HP D60 front and putting it in the rear. Seems like just a matter of fitting the exciter ring to a new ring gear.
And no Shawn, I don't want to switch to a manual.
saf-t scissors 05-23-2002, 11:06 AM Actually, Kurt did exactly what you're describing with his D60 swap. He's running a '96 OBD-II motor and E4OD. He had to swap in the PSOM and 4WABS module to process the signal for the ECM, but since you already have all this, it shouldn't be that difficult.
Bob, Kurt, and I have also been figuring out the details of getting VSS signals from the xfer like the older trucks. There is a guy on PBB that did it successfully with a 351/e4od into a B2, but he needed a ISSPRO box to help calibrate the signal.
Havack 05-23-2002, 01:37 PM I saw a page on something like this the other day. The guy had made a gear and put it on the t-case output. had to do some fancy mathe to get the new ring gear right, but he claims its works great. I'll see if I can find it.
Dustball 05-24-2002, 12:40 AM A friend has a Dynatrac rear 60 w/ the tone ring setup. Apparently what Dynatrac did was put a tone ring on just like normal but JB Welded the sensor onto the diff cover. At least that's what I remember. I'll have to take another look at it when I see him this weekend.
broncorob 05-26-2002, 04:21 PM I thought I remembered Norm saying he's done it before, but don't have his email. Did Ford ever have a D60 rear with the VSS. If so(and if you were trying to do it with a different D60) then you could use the exciter ring from that. Then I think you just have to put a hole in the top of the housing. Come to think of it, that VSS port is bolted to the housing. I guess I could go pull it off my old 8.8 and check it out.
saf-t scissors 05-26-2002, 08:10 PM The new 9.75 rear should have a tone ring that would work. I think most folks are just using 8.8 rings.
broncorob 05-28-2002, 06:08 AM I wouldn't have guessed the D60 ring gear would be the same size as either of those axles. Is that what you're saying(ie: transplant ring from one of those axles to the 60)
saf-t scissors 05-28-2002, 03:53 PM Yup. That's what I'm saying. The 9.75 rear (assuming it's usable, I've never seen the inside of one) should have a ring that would fit. The 8.8 ring can be made to work.

broncorob 05-29-2002, 07:47 AM Oh, I see what you're saying now. "Fit, but not really!" I still haven't pulled the old VSS off the old axle. I wonder how far the sensor can read from
Sapper 03-28-2003, 09:20 PM Any luck I am going to me doing the same very soon???
broncorob 03-31-2003, 07:59 AM Nope scrapped the idea. I put in a C6 and a 9"/mog hybrid rear so it's not relevent anymore:D

How much did you pay for the hybrid axle??? What gears are you running in the 9"?
broncorob 04-01-2003, 07:42 AM Enough :flipoff2:
www.exaxt.ca kicked in with some sponsorship funds also. It's running 2.48 in the pumpkin
Ken Carter / BRUISER 04-01-2003, 11:14 AM broncorob,
So when was your original plan to have it drive out of the shop??

broncorob 04-02-2003, 07:42 AM I'm hoping to be driving it in 3 weeks. Here are the latest pics
