: Edelbrock cam problems AMC 304
I'm having problems with my newly installed cam in my 304. I have ran this thing less then 10 miles after the break-in and it has ate the lobes up for the intake for number 1 and 2 cylinder off the cam and destroyed those 2 lifters. The weird thing is those lifters are the seconded lifters in line to get oil. (First would be the 1 & 2 exhaust lifters) If they weren't oiling right the rest of the lifters from there back wouldn't get oil........... The rest of the lifters are fine so I know it was oiling. It also has a new oil pump that I know has good oil pressure. I called Jegs and they are going to have me a new kit by friday, but I want to know why? Think maybe I got a bad cam?
Would anyone have a clue as to why?
Has anyone had this problem before?
I know there's some AMC motorheads on here. Who was the guy that posted a pic of his jeep pulling the front wheels leaving the line at a drag strip.
Sundowner 05-23-2002, 09:14 AM stupid question #1)
you did SOAK everything in the prelube that came with the cam and let it break in for 20min at part throttle?
stupid question #2)
you either replaced your valve springs with new ones to tolerate the add'l lift of the new cam, or you verified with the manuufacturer that your stock springs will work with the cam you selected.
ol John Henry 05-23-2002, 09:39 AM I have had several problems with edelbrock cams in the past. Core shift, incorrect machining etc. Just plain terrible cams IMHO
What seat pressure is recommended for your cam

Question #1- Yep, I used the hole bottle and done the 20min break in
Question #2 - The cam will work with stock springs

ChiefSlapaHo 05-23-2002, 12:12 PM I've got that pic on my screne saver :D Bad ass.. Sounds to me like a bad cam. Could it have been droped during shipping?

Froadin. He's at http://www.froadin.com and haven't seen him here in quite a while. My guess would be a bad hardening job. GM put out a shitload of 305's some years ago with that problem, but to a much lesser degree; ie. they'd run 10-20K miles or more before they started eating lobes. Also some Cadillac 425's came with soft cams (typically 70K or so before those'd go). I've always stayed away from Edelbrock cams because everyone I ever talked to that was running one couldn't tell me the lift, duration, or LCA. "Duuuh, it's just an Edelbrock, duuuhhh...." :rasta: (Obviously you're not in that category ;) )

That's a different pic than the one I was thinking of; probably a different guy too. Someone came in here looking for cotter pins as I was typing that post. That other CJ is black, has a warmed 401.

Thanks Lloyd.
Hopefully I'll get a good one this time. I guess you get what you pay for. I told dad last night that I'll never buy another Edelbrock part again. (maybe an intake but that's it) I've had to many problems with their stuff.
I just received the replacement cam from Ups and oddly enough I'm feeling sick:evil: I think I need to go home at lunch, don't you:D
bigdude 05-24-2002, 07:19 AM I think I have a replacement beadlock showing up today, so I also am feeling sick:D
3 weeks until ERocC, you'll be competing right? Like i told you before, I think you could do very well in legends. That is as long as you get rid of that geriatric spotter :D Next weekend I'm cruising up to SC and we're going to pratice some, I'll also be breaking in my Jeep. Hoping to place a little higher than 5th this time.

Yep, I'm competing. I plan on signing up next week. The plan was a little testing this weekend so that's why I'm scrambling to get this thing together. I have e-mailed Tim and he said he didn't see a problem with me waiting until next week to sign-up for the legends class. So yes, I will see you there.:D I've had my spotter on a weight/cardio program ever since the last Jellico event. Wait until you see him, you won't be able to tell him apart from the hulk:D:p ;)
bigdude 05-24-2002, 07:44 AM Don't forget that at this upcoming event they've made it mandatory to get drunk at the show and shine:D on Friday

As long as everything is wheelchair accessable and they have oxygen available----------------------------Sorry got tired and had to rest a minute-------------------------------------We'll do fine.:D

That's him. You can see it starting to lean towards the passenger side just a little in the photo; this is because he spun the RR tire off the rim. He said he had to lift and pull hard left to keep out of that fence. :D
Hammer 12-30-2002, 09:20 PM Wow, it has been a long time since I had enough time to visit this board (hardly have enough time for my own board! )
And damn that was a different kind of ride!
1: it was a borrowed 360 in it when I ran it that time (picture was on second pass, I smoked 4 pistons half way throug the first pass but kept running it anyway).
2: I actually lifted it higher then the picture!
3: Stiffer springs and low tire pressure sucks!@!@
I popped the clutch and I could only see trees and sky. I let up as I was siding up to the wall damn close! As I was getting it straightened out I hit the gas again while was 'bouncing' and smoked the tires and went sideways into the next lane, hit the brakes, pulled back into my own lane, and still ran a 19 something with a blown motor.
Yeah, that was pretty damn fun, and the motor was my friends :)
Ps, beadlocks really are a good thing for the dragstrip, too bad I didn't have them!!!
